Canelo Allowed Mandatory: WBC To Decide on Charlo, GGG

"Canelo Allowed Mandatory: WBC To Decide on Charlo, GGG"

The president of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulaiman, has revealed at the ongoing WBC convention in Kiev, that middleweight world champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (50-1-2, 34 KOs) will be allowed to make a voluntary defense if he returns to the ring in December.

Canelo is looking at the possibility of fighting on December 15th.

Canelo captured the WBC, WBA middleweight titles last month, after winning a twelve round majority decision over Gennady Golovkin at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

ut one of the big issues hanging in the background, is the obligation of a mandatory defense against WBC interim-middleweight champion Jermall Charlo.

Charlo expected to face the winner of the Canelo vs. Golovkin rematch.

"You have to review mandatory classifications and fights of the 17 divisions, and there are some very complicated issues... one of them is the future of Canelo as middleweight champion. Jermall Charlo who is interim champion, has the right to face the official champion. We understand that maybe [Canelo] will make a defense in December and we will be addressing that particular issue," Sulaimán said to ESPN Deportes.

The complications, Sulaiman said, would occur because he is waiting for an immediate rematch request from Golovkin - who will demand a third fight with the Mexican superstar.

"We know that GGG is requesting a rematch, it has not been formalized but [his intention to make that request] has already been announced - but there is the issue of Charlo and the theme of the champion who will make a voluntary defense (in December) before making the mandatory (in 2019) depending on the times that are given for that fight," said Sulaiman.

Another interesting issue in making a Canelo-Golovkin trilogy, is the recent decision by HBO to drop live boxing from the network's programming.

Canelo and Golovkin were both HBO fighters - and now find themselves as network free agents. And there is no guarantee that both boxers end up on the same network.

Thoughts?

During April of this year, Mauricio Sulaiman claimed the following:

"Obviously the fight between Triple G and Canelo, is the one that the world wants - ever since the bell sounded finishing their first fight... [Charlo] have accepted the WBC ruling. If the Golvokin vs. Alvarez fight is saved for September, [he] will accept [that the winner has to face the mandatory] and abide by that. And the mandatory will come into place after that."

So when the original Cinco de Mayo Canelo-GGG rematch date fell through in May, Sulaiman allowed Golovkin to face Vanes Martirosyan instead of Jermall Charlo.

Jermall Charlo’s mandatory title shot was delayed once again when the GGG-Canelo rematch took place last month.

It’s looking increasingly likely that Jermall Charlo may be forced to wait until the end of 2019 (or more likely, 2020) for his mandated shot at the WBC middleweight title, because Mauricio Sulaiman is allowing another voluntary defence of that crown and is strongly suggesting that GGG will be allowed to jump ahead of him on the queue.

To be honest, Mauricio Sulaiman’s treatment of Jermall Charlo’s mandatory status is shambolic. It makes a mockery of his own organisation, because they’re more interested in receiving sanctioning fees rather than administering their own rules (as per the WBC's handling of Deontay Wilder's mandatory title challengers). :brick:

In a non business sense, just purely hypothetically boxing sense, charlo should be getting a shot at that WBC

I don’t feel we need canel golovkin 3. We know they are closely matched, and the majority would suggest golovkin has an edge.

So Canelo vs charlo is the boxing match

Where golovkin goes I don’t know. Maybe at Saunders WBO

Jermall Charlo defeated the middleweight division’s highest-ranked WBC title challenger when he stopped Jorge Sebastian Heiland within four rounds, which was a final eliminator to determine the mandatory challenger to face GGG (as confirmed by Mauricio Sulaiman himself).

He then became the WBC's interim 160-pound champion when he KO’d Hugo Centeno Jr. during his very next outing, a bout that was ordered by the WBC, which further cemented his mandatory challenger status.

Jermall Charlo has been the mandatory challenger to the WBC middleweight crown for more than fourteen months! Charlo was told by the WBC that the winner of the Canelo vs. Golovkin rematch would be forced to face him next, but it seems they lied.

During 2016, the WBC threatened to strip Canelo of his 160lbs title if he failed to fulfil his obligations to defend his crown against their interim champion, which led to GGG being elevated to becoming the their full champion.

So why can’t the WBC behave consistently? Why are they forcing Jermall Charlo to wait more than two years to receive his mandatory shot at their title? The WBC forced him to face Heiland and Centeno Jr., but he’s still unlikely to receive his title shot within the next twelve months.

Alvarez will do whatever Alvarez wants to do......he and his promoter have a corrupt relationship with the WBC and the Nevada state athletic commission. No f*cker will ever get a fair shake against this guy.

While I don't agree with your conspiracy thoughts---it's always ludicrous when fans wildly make claims about GBP--it is likely that Canelo will do what he wants.

I don't think he gives a rat's ass about the belts. He's far bigger than those trinkets.

So if any of the sanctioning bodies want to eventually strip Canelo, don't expect him to be up in arms about it.

He'll be just as rich and famous with or without the glittery straps.

Maybe Charlo and Golovkin can eventually fight for any belt Canelo might choose to vacate.

Although Sanchez did say a few months back that he didn't want Golovkin in with Charlo.

Canelo vs GGG III on Cinco de Mayo 2019 with that WBC strap. Suleyman won't let that fat fee going away. I could see the WBC creating a mandatory for Jermall's interim WBC strap like Murray or Monroe and force him to defend it.

I think DLH will want GGG to become another year older to finally legitimately beat him. In May Canelo will fight whoever they decide and it will likely not be GGG.

It's a sad, sad situation and it's getting more and more absurd. I would let them fornicate me over once, maybe twice, maybe i would go all along with their corrupt shit and bend over backwards, but as soon as i'm champ & have their shitty belt i would announce a big presser, call them out on their bullshit! and every single shady shit they put me through corrupting their own rules for the moneys sake. And that shit stripe would go to a handpicked extra-shitty trash-bin right there on stage!
