Mikey Garcia vs. Richard Commey - Not Happening

Promoter Lou DiBella confirmed to BS.com on Tuesday that he has reached an agreement for his fighter, Richard Commey, to challenge Garcia for the IBF lightweight title. A date for the mandated Garcia-Commey match hasn’t been set, nor is an agreement in place with the network that’ll televise it.
DiBella and Garcia’s representatives came to an agreement, first reported by ESPN.com, late Monday night. A purse bid, scheduled for Tuesday afternoon at the IBF’s headquarters in Springfield, New Jersey, thus was canceled.
Garcia-Commey could be scheduled for as soon as December if it is broadcast by FOX as part of Premier Boxing Champions’ new deal with that broadcast network. Showtime, which has aired each of Garcia’s past five fights, also could televise it.
Ghana’s Commey (27-2, 24 KOs) is the mandatory challenger for Garcia’s IBF 135-pound championship. The New York-based contender is 3-0 since losing back-to-back split decisions to Robert Easter Jr. and Denis Shafikov in 2016.

I don’t mind this. Commey has only lost questionable SD’s.. if not for them he’d be what 29-0.. Garcia will surely do better than a SD win here i’m sure.
It’s a mandatory fight which see’s Garcia keep the IBF belt. Hopefully the plan will be for Garcia vs. Lomachenko. By end of the year Loma should be unified WBA/WBO champion.
Then Garcia-Loma will be an undisputed title fight.

A great scenario, hopefully nothing spoils it.

mikey would prob win a decision. his power at lw seems good but not great, the zlaticanin win flattered it a bit. these guys like easter and commey arent as skilled but are big guys who can last the course i think.

Garcia wins by late stoppage or decision victory. I don't envisage an upset occurring in this fight.

Shocking. Garcia talks about big fights but goes on to take the easy road. He will never fight spence.

It’s not a voluntary. It’s a mandatory or he loses s belt. Espinoza said the Spence fight can happen in 2019.
Like I said, Garcia vs. Loma would be for all the belts.

That sums it up.
Not a good fight for Garcia.
He pounds around Easter to partially unify the title.
Now, in his next fight, he plans to beat on the guy who lost to Easter in the fight for the vacant title.
That doesn't do anything for Garcia's profile. Just a stay busy bout.
All that talk of a move up to fight Spence in December sure has disappeared quickly, hasn't it?

basically, i think for mikey and loma they are really the only interesting fights out there for each other at lw. at least with pedraza loma still has the unification angle (his first time), though the opponent itself is merely okay and not that exciting
whereas at 130 for loma theres guys like berchelt, tank, and even guys like machado are a bit interesting
doubt mikey can make 130 now and at 140 many of the good names are in the wbss. the winner of that would be interesting for him but thats like a year away, and ramirez is with arum as is loma, so not sure how much possibility those are anyway given mikeys hsitory with bob

It sure has. I’ll give Mikey credit for the Easter win but I’ve just not been impressed with his other cherry picking fights. I’m not ready to put him in a P4P spot until I see him take on an elite fighter. He’s had plenty of chances but he chooses the easier belts. The biggest non fight was against Linares. Linares gave into all of Mikey’s demands only to see him opt for a cheap belt. Until he fights a top elite fighter in one of these weight classes then he’s nothing but a yawn to me

Agree. Really dont understand this whole Garcia - Spence thing. Seems like Pacquiao vs Kovalev to me

Garcia is a former 126 pounder. Spence is BIG welterweight of pure muscles. Anyway, i like Garcia - Commey fight

Don’t know why some are complaining about this fight being made.

i can understand
usually when a guys next opponent has already been beaten by the opponent he just almost shutout, you wont get too much excitment
its one of the best fights that can realistically be made at the exact moment, but the reality is i just dont think outside loma theres really much thats genuinely interesting for mikey at lw. commey is solid but hes no better then the guy mikey just dominated. and its true his losses were close but i thought easter and shafikov legit beat him
for elite talents like loma and mikey, theres often higher expectations and desires for who they fight.

Loma is busy with Pedraza, he got KO’d by Tank. Garcia will stay busy with Commey.

sure, but i dont expect ppl to be excited by it, literally the last guy mikey beat and nearly shutout already beat commey, its the type of fight that really doesnt offer much intrigue or interest

I think Commey is better than Pedraza, which makes that even more of a stay-busy fight than Loma-Pedraza. I think Loma will stop Pedraza as quick or quicker than Gervonte did, but I think Commey will go the distance and lose a clearcut but competitive decision.

loma vs pedraza is more meaningful because it makes a unified champ who could in theory make an undisputed showdown vs mikey. commey may well be better then pedraza although beltrans prob the top win between them. tbf i think commey wouldve beat him too,
lomas a boxer not an aggressive puncher, so i suspect his fight with pedraza goes longer then tanks did. because tank and loma are totally different styles and types of abilities how long there fights go doesnt itself say much in terms of who did better
vs outmatched opponents the punchers usually get it done earlier and more spectacular

I tell you what, some of these top lightweights need to square off soon because if they are waiting for something to marinate, it's not happening. From 126 to 135, there's so much talent up at the top of those three divisions but no one's fighting each other. Sad. Then we get a dull lob like this fight to get excited about...yeah no thanks.

Me either
Mandatory aside, Commey has a lot of heart, is always very fit and carry's a mix of skill and some power. OK he isn't one of the division super stars, but I for one, didn't see him losing to Easter Jr. So given that, it's an OK fight for Garcia in my opinion.
And given some of Garcia's opponents over the years, Commey ain't all that bad is he?
Could be worse

The @IBFUSBAboxing have just called for purse bids because they didn’t receive @mikeygarcia signed contract, if you don’t want to fight me just say so and vacate the title! @loudibella @Mickey_Moo @KBouhairie @BoxingGhana @premierboxing @Streetwisemgt @WorldBoxingNews @WBCBoxing

They must've offered Mikey some crazy money since he dropped his title. I thought the Commey fight was pretty much done.

Says they agreed terms but a purse bid was scheduled.
