do professional boxers pay to train in the gym ?

Now before I get stick I understand that a trainer gets 10% of a boxers purse sometimes even more if they manage them as well
But out of curiosity
I always wondered do professional boxers pay their "SUBS" to train for their fights ?
like amateur boxers have to pay every session so I wondered do some pro gyms do it as well ?

Thats how it is at my gym

I know of 4 pro gyms iv been to and only 1 charged the pro boxer to train aswell as getting the 10%. I think a pro boxer should pay weekly subs until they get to a level were his purse will generate enough so the 10% will cover the cost of the training. Other people
pay so why shouldn't the pro boxer?

Never in a gym of mine , Pro's pay enough with there percentage , and in any case if its a serious boxing gym , not a keep fit make money , box on the side gym , Pro's are worth there weight in gold for setting the pace , sparring the ameteurs , and showing what work rate is , a gyms only as good has its best boxers , and if you have a few goiod pro's then your half way there ,

Problem now is most 20 bout amateurs are as good if not better than most low level pros

I remember a few years Martin Murray saying he still paid gym subs to Oliver Harrison when he was with him. I'd imagine it was a fairly nominal sum.

The difference is that if you are fighting professionally you get paid and the trainer/manager already gets his cut.
It's irrelevant how good you are.

Everyone in my old gym weighed in but some of the pros had a key and would do their own thing out with scheduled sessions etc... Dunno what it's like at other gyms but I'd imagine everyone would have to pay their way because every little helps when trying to run a gym. Not an easy thing to do.

I was referring to your point about them being worth their weight in gold, moving the amateurs about. not mentioning no names but I've walked into a gym with about 6 pros working and couldn't believe the standard, not terrible but if some were sparring amateurs the spars would be 50-50 with 5-10 bouters and that's no exaggeration

It wasn't me that made that point, but it's true some gyms would let subs slide if the fighter am or pro made an active contribution to the gym.
As I already said pro's pay their subs through the managers cut.

Thats a fair point BUT it depends on the gym and the trainer , I would never allow a guy to turn pro if he was'nt of a high standard in the ameteurs ,But that was me , i do concede though there are guys out there who want so badly to be involved with pro's they would drag them of the streets if they could , My own son wanted to turn pro and i told him to go else where , i would'nt have a bar of it , simply because he would'nt train hard enough , 3 threes was the best you would get out of him , In 80 odd fights i never seen him lose a first rnd , don't think i seen him win many 3rd rnds , lol . lucky for him he won 70 odd 2nd rnds ,, point being , others would of loved him to come and turn over , but dispite being a good ameteur , i would'nt have a bar of it , because i had pro's who dispite not having his talent could take him into deep water and get the better in rnds 3-4-5- or 6 , so i suppose really it depends on the gym .

Fair play to you mate, Most would of turnt him over in a heart beat. Not all trainers are like that though as you know. I had one come up to me whilst I was shadow boxing he never seen me put a glove on and said have you thought about turning over if you sell tickets you might as well punch for pay. Chancers that's what a lot of em are in my eyes. A lot wouldn't even know how to train a boy from
Scratch they get given made fighters

yOUR DEAD RIGHT THERE.... the boxing world is full of chancers , guys who piss in the pockets of fighters wish i had a dollar for everyone i've seen , It is unfortunate that when you put 10 years into a kid , he pisses off with someone else , but heh , thats boxing , and to be honest sometimes its best to let them go , Example I could have a real good ameteur , turn him pro , starts of well and we hit a brick wall ,, along comes Adam Booth , Shane Mcguigan , and Promises them come with me , i've got Eddie and Frank both want you, I can get you a good deal , it would be selfish to stop or try to stop it happenning , they have the contacts and there contacts have the clout , its life ,

I agree with you mate the boxer comes first. If he can get a better a deal somewhere else you got to let them go. Rather have their best interest at heart and still have good feelings towards each other rather than him thinking what if and resenting you for it later on
