Hughie Fury's capacity on a higher level

Hughie is a very young competitor for a pro-boxer, he's only 24, but he has already tried to enter a bigger stage and he failed to do it successfully. The thing is, he has always been best known probably for being Tyson's little brother and a lot of people argued about him deserving a shot against Parker. However, it's a global problem today, Hughie wasn't the only one, who had been promoted to the shot instead of fighting to it. So for the moment out of his 23 pro-bouts he has faced top competitors twice: vs already mentioned Parker and vs Pulev now. He lost to Parker by MD and a lot of people argued about the decision indeed, Parker had quite some amount of disputable decisions, as we know. But Fury wasn't showing too much effort and effectiveness. Yesterday he has lost to Pulev absolutely fair and square, again without providing enough effort for a win.
So what do you think about him? He looks like a solid boxer with up to date popular rational boxing style, but he has failed to utilize it in a proper way. He survives good, but still fails to avoid a lot of significant shots and doesn't provide enough counters. He looks kinda hesitant. And an offence isn't likely to be his domain at all, taking into account how clumsy he was in it against Pulev. Is it rawness or lack of talent? How do you see Hughie against the other today contenders, like Whyte, Miller, Breazeale, Kownacki, and other top guys, like Povetkin, Ortiz, Takam, Chisora? Do you think Hughie will improve in the future?

He is bloody frustrating to watch, big guy with good boxing ability, not bad on his feet and best of all has a great jab, but despite all that he has no boxing brain, he probably can look a million dollars in the gym but he is just one of those that cant be relied upon to turn up on the night, we have seen flaky types like Hughie before and unfortunately they rarely turn it around so I think we have a few more frustrating nights to sit through with him with maybe the odd good night thrown in.

On this performance the top boys inc Whyte and Chisora would be happy to take Hughie on.
This was a bit of an acid test and while Fury was competitive, it is clear he needs to significantly improve if he is going to get wins at this level and above.
For me a bit of everything, man strength, fitness, power, accuracy.
People making scathing comments are well short of the mark.

ppl wanted him to be more aggressive then vs parker, but he looked really clumsy and uncomfortable when he tried to take the lead offensively,. so you have a guy whose generally negative but then isnt suited to stepping it up either. the right hand is decent as a counter, but so telegraphed and sloppy when he goes first.
and also, im not sure if his jab is really that good at the higher levels. too often he throws it out of range as an air punch. pulev actually is one of the better jabbers at the higher levels and he clearly outjabbed hughie and sliced him up with it
clearly, he can be a tricky hard to hit clean opponent even for top 10 fighters, but as far as actually going over the line to win at top level, hes not there yet. hes young an maybe will make the improvements, but improvment isnt assured just because hes young

He needs a new trainer. No tactics, no ideas. I accept the cut didn’t help him but the entire fight was jap, looping right hand. So predictable. Tyson was by because his boxing IQ is good, he could throw jabs to the body, slip, uppercut, mix his shots up. Hughie doesn’t do any of that

He is boring, and not very good in reality. Wooden, predictable, and no fire in his belly.

I'd have to agree tbh. The only time I've enjoyed watching him was against Sexton who was inactive, well past his best and wasn't very good to begin with
Last night Hughie was simply overmatched and well out his depth!

People keep going on about how young he is, but he's been fighting long enough now to see that he isn't going to ever be elite level or even close.
To win a belt he'd have to be in with a really terrible paper champ.

its a good point, a lot of lacky people seem to think there is this perfect relationship with age and improvement, but improvement varies wildly and some guys arent any better at 30 then 24. and its hardly as if it is just some small gap between hughie and the top. he could imrpove but still not cut it at the highest levels

Bit harsh but after last night's showing I couldn't disagree with anything you said .
He'd been matched well to build up his record and at this level doesn't cut the mustard .

With Hughie's limited punching power, his best chance of winning a fight is to out work and out land his opponent for most of the rounds. If the stoppage comes along, that's great, but plan A has to be to win the majority of the rounds. Fury has some excellent fundamentals, good movement, a good jab, good shot selection and for the most part good balance, so he has ability. What stopped him from executing Plan A against Pulev? His work rate. If he's going to improve that, he needs to be in the absolute best condition to achieve it. Of course genetics play a part, but the kind of shape he was in for the Pulev fight can definitely be improved on. I wonder how he would do with Adam Booth or Joe Gallagher? If he keeps coming into the ring in anything less than top shape, then he will be relying on the kind of lightning in a bottle punch landing to get Plan B to work.

Doesn't have the power, fitness, attitude or punch arsenal to excel at top level. Also, he's awful to watch.

Watched the Pulev fight back this morning. Some great attributes are there for Fury - movement, judgment of distance, elusiveness, body attack.
But the bad habits he has developed are shocking for a fighter at this level: poorly telegraphed right hands, totally neglecting the jab from round 3 onwards, apparently never throwing a proper left hook or uppercut in his life. And strength/conditioning clearly leaves a lot to be desired.
Thing is as well, he may only be 24 but all these flaws have been there since he started. A period under a new trainer would do a lot for Hughie to iron them out. I do think there is world-level potential in there somewhere but not while he's following the same routine over and over.
