Young writer plans to glove up

A young BBN writer, Matt Howarth, is planning to exchange a few blows with a pro. Not as a professional contest but he has written two pieces for us and they make good reading.

What is maybe more interesting is that he has had a BBC film crew following him for months now, making a documentary series to be shown next year about people making big changes in their life. They've followed him round covering a show, gyms, etc.

Well done to Matt, good break (especially with the cameras).

Hope he goes easy on the Pro.

I met Matt as he came to my gym with the film crew. They followed him around whilst he was put through his paces. There is nothing new in this idea for me though as David Matthews turned himself from journalist into boxer whilst writing his book "Looking for a fight". I suppose however, the BBC will engage a larger audience as we are a lazy lot when it comes to picking up a book.

I don't think Matt says it is anything new, he actually talks about others who have already done this type of thing, he has just always harboured the ambition to get in the ring, and also to find what it is like to step into the squared circle for the first time

Well as I said it will reach a larger audience and with the new academy docusoap programme coming out shortly it should give many people who have often only seen negative things written or shown about boxing a better understanding of the sport from an individual perspective.

That's the point, how many people actually read that book outside of hardcore boxing fans, I am all for the interest being shown by the BBC. Boxing needs way to reach new fans, not rely on the same dwindling bunch.

What ever happend to that book in which a journalist tried a host of sports competitively. I remember him in the semi final of the AAA 100 metres and also ran against the very best runners in the 60 metres. He also came on for 10 minutes in a conference football game and when interviewed said that he was preparing for an amateur boxing bout.

What happend to this proposed book?

If it is, I seem to remember the guy gets namechecked in the BBN article - 'Playground of the Gods' by Ian Stafford?

that is the book its great, he trained with sprinboks when they were world champs, cricket with the aussies, book opens up i think with his visit to pakistan to play squash against Jansher Khan. And finishes with him sparring Jones I seem to recall.
