Carlos Palomino versus Pipino Cuevas

I would pick Carlos Palomino to win a bout with Pipino Cuevas. In addition being very durable and having some punching power, Palomino had far more in the way of skills than the relatively crude Cuevas.

This came up several years ago. It is an interesting one. I leaned toward Palomino; I think the majority did as well, but some favored Cuevas. Too bad it didn't happen.

This was a natural matchup that definitely should have occurred back in the late '70s when both men were at their peaks but due to promotional differences, it never did. Which is a shame because it had the makings of a classic.
Cuevas was a much bigger puncher & actually had the more impressive title reign with 10 successful title defenses against top flight fighters such as Angel Espada, Harold Weston, Pete Ranzany & Randy Shields while Palomino best victories as champion were over a past it Armando Muniz & Davey "Boy" Green.
But, based on their matches vs truly great fighters in losing their titles & during their post-championship careers, I think that Palomino may have been able to withstand Cuevas' early offensive onslaught en route to counterpunching his way to a late round TKO victory.

Much easier to pick palomino now, I would too, than at the time. Curves was breaking jaws left and right. I think he was a slight favorite against Tommy

You could very well be right. That may have been during the time in which there was a ban on unification fights by the 'BA & 'BC. Thus Zarate vs Zamora only being a 10 round nontitle affair. Good call.
