Since the Marciano vs Wilder topic generated so much debate I thought this might be another good matchup. Marciano fought Charles and Wilder is scheduled to fight Fury so I thought it might be fun to compare these two.

This matchup is no less freakish, than Rocky vs Wilder. It's tougher to judge. considering the fact, that Fury hasn't realised all his potential yet. But anyway Fury wouldn't have been an easy work for Ezzard. Charles was truly a classy boxer, but Fury ain't no a stiff. In addition to the possession of such anthropometric qualities Fury can use them in a proper way. It wouldn't have been easy for Charles to get to so far placed and mobile target. It wouldn't have been a good idea for Charles to trade inside either, cause an attempt to overpower a guy, who would have been about 70 lbs heavier, wouldn't have been too sound for sure.

there is a punch fury gets hit with.

when he throws his right hand, he stands straight up like a stick, and gets hit by counter right hands.

Image

when a big man and a shorter man are trading a pair of right hands, the shorter man can go under the right hand the big man is throwing, but the big man cant.

Image

making fury a sucker for counter right hands.

Ezz would force Fury to do this over and over again out of pure frustration. At some point the ref would be forced to step in and put an end to it.

You can't use fights when people are/were relatively green against them. Prior to Cunningham you could argue Fury fought nobody and was still learning; besides, Fury essentially controlled the bulk of the fight against Cunningham--- who I might add was 30 pounds heavier & much taller than Charles!

It's difficult to imagine someone barely 6' and 200 pounds reaching someone just a few inches shy of 7' whose nearly 70 pounds bigger, who is actually athletic and quick of hand & feet. I'm not saying that it can't be done but, if Fury leans away from someone he's 8' away from them. What are you going to do with that? Nevermind the fact that Fury is so awkward and can switch from southpaw to orthodox.

I love the Cincinnati Cobra, one of my favorites from my home state, but considering he started out 147 as an amateur--- I just can't see him doing anything with Tyson Fury.

100% agreed. Ezzard Charles was a masterful boxer & an all time great but there are weightclasses for a reason, in his prime he would've fought as smw/light heavy by todays standards. What's next as hypthetical matchup? Monzon vs. Klitschko? Hagler vs. Lennox? Leonard vs. Ali? Saddler vs. Frazier? Pep vs. Tyson?

He also would have thrown 20 punches a round, been exhausted after 15 minutes by today's standards. A guy like fury couldn't dream of keeping up with the speed and pace of Charles. The pace of a foty with Vargas/miura, good fight, made me laugh because holy field and bowe probably landed twice as many punches in heavyweight fights. The lack of training and endurance is what hurts modern fighters in comparison to other eras. Obviously experience and hunger plays a role too.

People say Fury has no chin, but look at the number of punches he is taking there without going down. I've been watching it for ten minutes now and he hasn't wobbled yet.

Also... The heavyweights today are 240+ and arguably take more punishment as a result... A 200 pounder hitting these giants may as well be like hitting a battleship with a sledgehammer, barely putting in dents.

Good point. They also arguably can take less punishment.

i dont buy the too tall to hit theory. for one thing, you dont throw a punch up to the top of the head. you throw a punch down to the point of the chin.

when you hear a guy try to intimate a heavyweight is too tall to hit, make sure you point out he is going to get hit on his jaw, not on top of his head, where his height was measured.
HomicideHenry wrote: 06 Nov 2018, 00:08 if Fury leans away from someone he's 8' away from them. What are you going to do with that?
the gap in size is big. how big is the gap in skill? fury still has to punch. this means he still can be countered.

heres a big 6'6 heavyweight hit by a counter right hand from a small 6'1 heavyweight.

Image

there probably is a cap at some point when a man is just too tall to hit. but we can safely estimate a guy around 6'6 is not too tall to hit for a guy around 6'1 anyway.

No arguing about it. That's not even delving into today's fighters dealing with a lightweight pace

Fury is not Carnera or Willard, who were easy to hit.

Bullshit. One punch landing out of fifty, seventy, a hundred, isn't impressive to me. You people are nuts. Fury would eat Ezzard Charles alive.

Tell me HOW a guy who was an amateur WELTERWEIGHT whose best years were at LIGHT HEAVYWEIGHT barely 6' tall is going to knockout a guy 250+ pounds who is nearly 7' tall with the athleticism to match the size?

Draw up the blueprint asshole.

That wouldn't happen either. If Cunningham (who was much bigger than Charles) was essentially out boxed and out fought and got kayoed by Fury, there's no way Charles is making it. Body shots from a giant and a constant jab in his face, Charles would be chopped to bits.

Very convincing.
Valuev was more than 10 inches taller then Holyfield who was shot by that time. It's almost like it matters how good the fighters are.
