I remember being very impressed with Guzman after watching him a few times in the early 2000’s. He looked like a can’t miss star and his name was mentioned alongside Manny Pacquiao’s for a few years. However to say their respective careers went in different directions would be an understatement! How good was Guzman? And why didn’t he get those mega fights (and paydays) his talent probably deserved?

I think it was just lack of commitment and inactivity.

He just didn't have the necessary drive. Got some decent paydays and then stopped working hard. I remember poor Ali Funeka getting the shaft against him in a draw for the vacant title and then I went to the re-match where Guzman was about 8-9 lbs over the weight limit and just laughed on the scale and he beat Funeka up the next day. Funeka should have sued him. After that I really didn't pay much attention to Guzman, a fighter who I'd liked and considered a threat to all the elite.
