Anyone who browses on the Boxing History section might notice I watch a lot of old fights and fighters, some cracking fights some not so much but equally as important or featuring well known names, ive only been doing it a few years, trying to educate myself about the older fights ive read about over the years

I was thinking about maybe doing a thead similar to Horse's British weekly challenge, although I was thinking fortnightly for this one as considering all the boxing that's on these days its hard enough to catch up within a week while juggling work, familes etc. I'm not sure if theres anyone on here who might've not watched as much Ali, Robinson, Leonard, Louis, Duran and Co

What do you reckon?

Before I had too many kids, I used to watch and read about the great fights in history. Used to be a real boxing nerd for stats about fights, remembering things like that left hook SRR landed on Fullmer to regain the title and even remember an interview with Gene saying that he thought Robinson must be fit as he was doing exercises between rounds (jumping up and down). His manager explained that he had been knocked out and Robinson was celebrating.

Now, I hardly have time to watch even 10% of the current fights I want to watch

Sometimes I watch fights right back to 2005. The glory days.

Yes I watch quite a lot.

I collect boxing memorabilia so I watch the fighters I’ve got’s, fights over and over again.
Just so I can have a couple of good story’s if I’m ever questioned on them (I never am).

From boxing junkies i have arguello's DVD set, Pryor, holyfield, Jeff French, the Marquez brothers, James Toney, Margarito, odlh and Hopkins sets. Hopkins was a high volume almost pressure fighter up till about 32. Also Rafael Marquez was never in a bad fight.

Where classic tales from yesteryear are told or invented ( he's gone now though)

Now and again, but when I was younger i used to make a point of watching everything I could. Back in the mid 80s I had one of the largest boxing VHS collections you can imagine, thousands of tapes and had a very good side business selling hundreds of compilation tapes to fans around the UK, who were starved of watching all the latest US action. There was just no other way of seeing it back then.

I had contacts with dealers and other tapers in the US and France ( and a big satellite dish to pick up German and Italian shows direct ) And we were just trading about 10 tapes per week with about 30 hours of action, Just keeping up with all the action and whoever needed a certain fight, you’d get it and trade it for some you wanted etc. I had complete collections of all the great fighters Wilfred Gomez, Arguello, Zarate, Sanchez, hagler EVERYTHING - tapes would take about 10 days to arrive from the US.

I don’t know what happened to them but the main big vhs fight traders back then were Brian Fletcher from Leeds Paul Hughes from Wales Lawrence Williams from Reading, and a few others I can’t remember- Eric guy who taped every UK show going and would turn up with whatever tapes you were trading with him in the boot of his car. He used to be after European fight tapes which he would then supply to the UK boxers who wanted to check out upcoming opponents.

I remember when I first put a small linage add in boxing news advertising fights for sale I had absolutely 100s of customers instantly. I got a letter from Micky Duff warning me not to sell his stuff which naturally I ignored.

Wow it sounds like the Stone age back then, it was only 30 years ago I suppose !

Needless to say I didn’t hang onto my collection, vhs degrades and what the hell, it’s all on YouTube now.

But the vast majority of all those old YouTube fights come from those VHS collections

I used to get my tapes from a guy from Streatham in the early 80s I saw advertising in boxing news, as far as I can remember he was the only one getting all the fights from the USA back then...good days !

Wasn't Paul petrou was it?

No it was a guy who's surname
was Bassett. .first name might have been trevor ..can't remember 100% !

I think mine may have been from him too,they were advertised in Boxing News and were mostly american fights,i had bout 200 tapes at one time but had to eventually get rid of them.

Don't watch many nowadays , but thinking about it , i tried to think of guys who were not main stream in great fights , ala ,, Ali-Frazier , Hagler - Sugar Ray Leonard ,,, and thinking about it i came up with a name of a guy i used to like watching really liked his style , not so well known but a good fighter Frenchman Julien Lorcy , i'm gonna try and look some of his fights up and see if i can spot the things i used to like about him .

Some archive channels upload a lot of old footage, a lot in the UK.
