fighter of the year 2018

year not over yet to be fair, but for me usyk wrapped it up today

in 2018:

-became undispited and lineal champ, being the first cruiser with the wbo/wba/wbc/ibf
-beat probably the next two best guys in the division (both champs) and a former champ who hadnt lost at cruiser
- 3 wins
-all wins in his opponents backyard (briedis in latvia, gas in russia, bellew in uk)

wilder and canelo are prob my next two assuming they win, but i think usyks already got it. any other suggestions? anyone got someone else?

Joshua.

Beat Parker and Povetkin.

He's not my pick but he has to be in the mix.

Wilder too if he beats Fury decisively. Also has the KO over Ortiz.

Only problem with Joshua and Ortiz is that they each only had 2 bouts.

I prefer that FOTY fight at least 3 times. Stay busy to earn the award.

A reason why you shouldn't ignore Munguia. The victims are huge names but at least Munguia's eager to fight.

Can't be anyone but Usyk.
Even if Wilder wins against Fury, old man Ortiz had him in a world of trouble and Fury may do the same, where as Uysk never looked even hurt this year.
Joshua did beat Povitkin, thats a big win, but Parker not so much.

Yeah, nobody did the same big things Usyk had done. Unifying 2 belts, then taking all 4, then defending, every time against top opposition, every time decisively (not to count bad scores vs Briedis and vs Bellew). No doubt about that, Usyk is a fighter of the year and a proven CW ATG #2.

Canelo's biggest win was very arguable and Wilder will have good chances for the fighter of the year award, cause in a case of a win he'll have a top contender and lineal champ in his resume, yes, but he won't do it, The Gypsy King will unify the lineal championship with WBC belt. However, that single big win won't be enough in comparison to all Usyk's wins, I'll be for Usyk in any case.

Got to be Usyk. If Canelo would have fought somebody at world or elite level and got another win in December he would be a contender for it, but by choosing fielding he's missed out on that in my opinion

has to be usyk all 3 fighters he has faced this year are the next best 3 in the division imo some fighters don't even fight 3 times in a year

Agreed on usyk deserving the award. Not even close to one of the greatest years ever.

Greb went 45-0 in a year. They fought way more often even in the 80's and 90's. Not fault to the modern guys, I'm sure greb would trade all those wins for usyks paycheck yesterday.

I was throwing out the names of fighters who should be considered besides Usyk.

Joshua is obviously one. Why does that seem confusing?

I guarantee that Usyk won't be a unanimous choice. A thousand different groups, organizations, media and the like select a FOY.

They all won't choose the same guy even though the majority will probably pick Usyk.

Last year, some went with Lomachenko. Others liked Crawford.

It will be the same this year. Joshua will get his votes. He won't get mine but he obviously must be considered.

Yeah, it's Usyk.

Also has quite the philosophical brain by any measure. Could be Philosopher of the Year if it weren't for Jordan Peterson.

Usyk is clearly first.
started the year with the WBO cruiserweight title. ended the year with WBA (Super), WBC, IBF, WBO, The Ring, and lineal cruiserweight title. and won a sweet trophy too.

Cannot be anyone but Usyk.

Only other contender would have been Canelo if he decisively beat GGG and Fielding, but ... you know.
