It'll be a decent bout, probably not spectacular, but a moderately entertaining one for sure. Quillin takes this, but the method of victory depends on which version of Truax decides to enter the ring.

“In my home state, this is my biggest fight for sure,” Truax (30-4-2, 19KOs) noted to BS.com. “I’ve fought at home on ESPN2 Friday Night Fights before, but this one will top ‘em all. It’s an IBF eliminator, must-win for both of us. The fans out here are really knowledgeable and it’s going to be a big night at the Armory.”

The 35-year old from St. Michael, Minn. now finds himself one win away from returning to the title stage, and granted the benefit of home court advantage.

“This is a really big opportunity, for me and for my state,” Truax notes. “Minnesota has been overlooked for too long, but the fans turn out anytime there’s a show. It’s such a great time right now. You got me, Jamal, (middleweight titlist) Rob Brant just fought here in front of a sold-out crowd—it’s been a long time coming for Minnesota to be on the boxing map.”

Truax’s eliminator with Quillin will mark the state’s third major show to take place all within the span of barely two months. Brant made the first defense of his 160-pound title with an 11th round knockout of Khasan Baysangurov on ESPN in February, just nine days before Anthony Dirrell’s hotly contested technical decision win over Avni Yildirim, which—much like will be the case for the April 13 show—aired live on FS1 from The Armory.

“The segment just recently aired; I was at the gas station and it was on in the background,” Truax noted. “People who’ve seen me there plenty of times just as a customer are seeing it on TV and looking at me like, ‘I didn’t know you were a boxer.’ It’s just such really good exposure we’ve never really had in the past.”

Assuming the upcoming show meets or surpasses expectations, it’s safe to say there will be plenty more to come.

“Rob Brant’s show at Grand Casino (in Hinckley, Minn.) was sold out, and (Dirrell-Yildirm) had a great crowd too,” notes Truax. “This card is going to be sold out and probably the biggest one yet. All my friends and family have been talking about it since day one. The (event handlers) are expecting 5,000-6,000, whatever they got it set up for, there won’t be any empty seats.

“The fans here, they don’t just come because it’s a big boxing event. It’s almost like it becomes a destination on fight night. There’s no better time to be a boxer than right now with all of the TV deals, and for my home state to be a part of that—it’s just long overdue.”

“I’m approaching this fight like it’s a winner take all, loser go home type fight,” said Truax. “If I win this fight, I get another title shot, I make some money. If I don’t, I don’t know where I go from here. The loser of this fight’s gonna be in a tough spot.”

If Quillin feels the same way, there will be fireworks in Minneapolis. If not, Truax could have an easy night. So does Truax think Quillin shares his all or nothing mentality heading into this weekend?

“When we were together in Los Angeles for the PBC Face to Face, that’s the message I portrayed and that’s not the message that he portrayed. He said he was content with his legacy already and content with his resume. So I don’t know if it’s that he’s not hungry, but the way I see it, in order for me to keep on providing for my family as a professional boxer, I need to win this fight and that’s why I’m so motivated to do it.”

And if he does get another crack at the crown, he’s already got plans for after he wins a second belt.

“I’m gonna buy a bass boat, man,” Truax laughs. “I told myself if I beat DeGale the second time I was gonna buy myself a bass boat and I didn’t come out victorious, so I didn’t buy the boat. But if I win a second world title, I’m buying the most expensive bass boat I can get with some power poles and crazy electronics and everything. You might never see me in the ring again. I’ll be fishing all year round.”

Quillin def needs the Ko to even still be in the talks of competing for world title any where in all of middle weight divison but wouldn't be surprised if he ends up attempting light heavyweight.

Caleb Truax admits almost retiring after 2016 loss to Anthony Dirrell

“After the Dirrell fight, I was thinking I was going to retire.”

Former Champion @GoldenCalebT opens up about his struggles outside of the ring. pic.twitter.com/hTooJMoVP7
— FOX Sports: PBC (@PBConFOX) April 9, 2019
*******************************

On training in Minnesota

“I had the time to go to training camps in Las Vegas and California and see what it’s like, and it’s great to go there, especially when I’m younger and didn’t have any family or anything like that. It’s great to get out of state and do that, but I’m at a point now where I just don’t have any interest in doing it. It’s different, it’s cold and they make us a little tougher here in Minnesota. I wouldn’t want to train anywhere else.”

On his 2016 TKO-1 loss to Anthony Dirrell

“Coming out of the Danny Jacobs fight [in 2015], I just wanted to regroup. I took a little bit of time off, I took maybe a month off or something like that, I just wanted to regroup and go back to the drawing board.”

“My life has hectic leading up to the Anthony Dirrell fight. I had had a terrible experience with my girlfriend; when she was giving birth to my daughter, she had almost died in childbirth due to a brain bleed. That’s an injury where, when a fighter passes away, that’s what they pass away from, a brain bleed. I was taking care of my daughter solo.”

“The fight was in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and I remember when I get to the locker room, I’m just having, like, a nervous breakdown almost; I’m just freezing cold and shaking, and I’m sitting in the bathtub with no water, obviously, with my clothes on, and trying to breathe and beat a panic attack, 30 minutes before I was supposed to go fight.”

On thoughts of retirement after the loss to Dirrell

“After the Dirrell fight, I was thinking that I was going to retire. I remember talking to my coaches, talking to my promoters, talking to my family, and saying, ‘I’m gonna take a little time off, and if I ever feel like that again, there’s no way I’m gonna step into the ring again.’”

“I’m not sure what brought me back. I knew that it was a good opportunity to provide for my family and make a little bit of money to provide my daughter with a good life. I don’t know. I can’t put my finger on one certain thing that brought me back. Maybe it was just a storm of everything together bringing me back.”

On life these days, after winning a world title

“I’m really lucky to basically be a stay-at-home dad. I get to pick and choose when I want to work out, other than my boxing gym, that’s before every day, but I’m fortunate to have the schedule that I do and be able to see my daughter grow up.”

“I don’t get too wrapped up in ‘Cinderella Man’ and ‘Minnesota’s Rocky’ and all that stuff that I’ve heard. I’m just a dude that goes out there and gets to do what I love doing every single day. And I get to spend more time with my daughter than I would if I had a 9-to-5. So it is what it is, man. I’m just a guy who likes what he does.”

Quillin-Truax starts tomorrow night at 10 pm ET on FS1, with prelim fights beginning at 8 pm ET on FS2.

PETER QUILLIN VS. CALEB TRUAX FINAL PRESS CONFERENCE QUOTES

Also in attendance at the press conference were top middleweight contender Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Jack Culcay, who battle in an IBF Middleweight Title Eliminator, and sensational prospect Joey Spencer, who takes on Osias Vasquez to kick off the telecast beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT.

Tickets for the event, which is promoted by Warriors Boxing and TGB Promotions, are on sale now, and can be purchased at the Armory at http://ArmoryMN.com/ and through Ticketmaster.

Here is what the press conference participants had to say Thursday from the Generals Hall at The Armory:

PETER QUILLIN

“I’m here to put on a great fight. That’s what we worked so hard to do on Saturday night. I’m excited to showcase my talents on FS1 and FOX Deportes and make a statement at super middleweight.

“My wife just had a daughter, and that’s been my biggest motivation all training camp. I’m fighting for my family, not just myself. I’m hoping to inspire people who see my story and realize it’s not just about the fight, but about what we’re fighting for. I’m here to spread a positive message.

“When we’re in that ring, all I’m going to see is Caleb Truax, nothing else matters. I’m very fortunate to be here and have the chance to display my skills. He has to look good in front of his fans, and I’m just here to give the fans a good fight. There’s no pressure to do anything extra.

“The weather here kind of reminds me of back home in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Going to new cities is kind of like having new places to conquer. I’m here with the right mindset that Minnesota is going to be a place I’m remembered and that I’ll have a great memory from.

“When I sparred Caleb I remember I knocked his headgear off and it flew across the ring, that’s the only thing I really remember from that. I knew our paths could eventually cross. I’ve had my eye on him and I was really happy for him when he won his title. I have a feeling we’re going to combine for a great fight.

“I have a very determined opponent and I’m fighting in his backyard. It’s a tough fight for both of us. I have to put my authority down on this fight and control it. It’s going to be hard with all his fans in there, but what I’ve always done is take negative circumstances, and turn them into positives.”

CALEB TRUAX

“I’m excited for Saturday night. It’s a big fight and important for me that I’m in the main event and in a title eliminator. I’m looking to earn a chance at another title and I know that I have to take care of business on Saturday to get there.

“I’m looking forward to sharing the ring with Peter Quillin, a guy I’ve known and respected for a while. He’s accomplished a lot. I think that our styles are really going to clash and give the fans a lot of action and drama.

“Peter and I sparred a long time ago, back in 2012. I came away feeling confident that if we ever fought, I’d be able to get the job done. I don’t remember much of the specifics, but I felt confident from the experience. At the same time, I’m expecting an even better Peter Quillin on Saturday night and that’s what I trained for.

“I’ve tried to train a little bit smarter for this one. I need to focus more on recovery at this point in my career. I’ve had pretty much the same team around me for a while now. We do the old school training and work hard every day.

“The stakes are high for this fight. Whoever wins hopefully gets a crack at the title. It’s going to be tough for the loser to bounce back. If I want to keep fighting I have to leave Saturday with my hand raised.

“It’s a thrill to be in this fight and have it here at The Armory in front of my hometown fans. I saw the support that (fellow Minnesota-native) Jamal James got for his last fight, and I’m expecting more of that on Saturday. It’s going to be special and I’m going to take advantage.”

SERGIY DEREVYANCHENKO

“I’m happy to be here for this world title elimination fight. This fight is important for my career to get back to where I want to go and to show what I am capable of.

“On Saturday night I’m going to put on a really good show and give the fans a beautiful fight. Everyone knows I always bring action and great technical skill. I am confident that I will be victorious on Saturday and go on to win a world championship.”

JACK CULCAY

“It’s nice to be here and I’m very thankful for this opportunity against Derevyanchenko. It’s a great honor for me to be in this fight against one of the best middleweights in the world. This the step that I was looking to take in my career.

“I’ve been sparring with Caleb Truax, and I feel it’s gotten me completely ready for this challenge. I’m going to show it in the ring on Saturday night. It’s going to be a lot of action and a lot of skill in the ring.”

JOEY SPENCER

“I’m really excited to be fighting on this card headlined by Peter Quillin and Caleb Truax. I want to thank everyone for the support, both my fans and my team for everything that’s gotten me here. We’ve worked really hard every day in training camp and I can’t wait to put on a show.

“The Armory is a great venue with great energy. I’ve fought here before and I’m looking forward to coming out and putting on another great performance for this Minneapolis crowd.”

LEON MARGULES, President of Warriors Boxing

“I’m excited to welcome everyone back to the latest PBC fight night at the armory. Those who have come to the previous shows have noticed that the crowds have gotten larger and larger. These shows are generating great excitement and Saturday is another example of a card loaded with elite fighters.

“It’s really a terrific treat to be promoting this card. It should be a great night of boxing for everyone at The Armory and watching on FS1 or FOX Deportes. This card is stacked from top to bottom and is set to deliver from start to finish.”

Nice to see Truax looking fit again. For his last fight he came in slightly over and didn't look that fit.

Quillin, apart from that embarrassing loss to Danny Jacobs, is always difficult and dangerous. There was a time when he was talked about as the next great champion.

I look forward to an exciting fight and Truax wins by decision. Of course that could be the homer in me.

Truax is listed as the underdog in tonight’s fight against Quillin. Despite the odds against him, the optimistic Truax believes he has what it takes to win.

“I feel no pressure going into this fight,” Truax told BS earlier this week. “There’s no better place for me than the state of my mind I’m in. I’ve been more active than Quillin over the last two-three years. He’s only had two fights, while I have stayed busy and fighting often.

“I’m counting on him to be the best Peter Quillin. I just believe that he might not be as sharp as he would if he were active. I’m always in shape and sparring. I just think the intangibles play to my advantage.”

The 12-round super middleweight bout between Peter "Kid Chocolate" Quillin and "Golden" Caleb Truax ended in a no-contest at the end of the second round on Saturday after an accidental head-butt opened a deep gash between Truax's right eye and nose.

The ringside doctor ruled that the cut was down to the bony tissue and the blood was dripping into Truax's eye, obscuring his vision. The end was a disappointment for the boxers and the large crowd at the Minneapolis Armory.

The bout was an IBF eliminator, with the winner to get a shot at titleholder Caleb Plant, who was ringside to scout his next challenger.

Brooklyn's Quillin (34-1-1, 1 ND, 23 KOs) said he is willing to have a rematch. Both Truax (30-4-2, 1 ND, 19 KOs) of nearby Osseo, Michigan, and Quillin are former titleholders -- Truax at super middleweight and Quillin at middleweight.
