Aussie boxing legend Lionel Rose has admitted he was driving without a licence when involved in a car smash this week.
And he says he drank "a couple of beers" before the crash.
"We were there having a pint," Rose said. "I don't know what happened after that. I don't think the boys know exactly what happened.
"The first thing I remember is waking up in the hospital."
Nursing a battered left eye and sore ribs at his home yesterday, Rose said he did not even remember being cut out of the car.
Rose was driving a Nissan Bluebird at about 5.10pm on Tuesday when it collided with a Mitsubishi Lancer.
The Nissan then bounced off a truck.
Partner Jenny Rose said: "When you see the car, you think, how the hell did they get out of that?"
There were three men in the car, all of whom survived with injuries. Nobody in the other two vehicles was hurt.
Rose, who was visiting relatives, said he had not held a licence for "a long time."
"I might have had three or four beers . . . if that," he added.
He did not believe he was over the limit, but admitted he "wouldn't have a clue."
Since Tuesday's crash, the boxing community has rallied around Rose. Jeff Fenech was the first on the phone after the accident.
Police are also investigating.

Very sad, Rose has had a drink problem for some time I think.....

alcohol is a huge problem in Aboriginal society, I've seem first hand the Destruction it has caused. Apparently there is a gene missing in there genetic make-up.

Because this gene is missing its makes it easy for Aboriginal people to get addicted to alcohol.

yeah i heard that too.... being shit on for 200 plus years doesnt help either

I'd say the old boy looks in good enough shape these days, apart from the black eye that is. Doesn't look like a 50+ alcoholic, just someone who likes a few beers maybe.
Driving through the Aussie outback, he's probably not used to seeing cars coming in the other direction anyway!

Great fighter. Sadly I've only ever seen his fight with Olivares, when he was overwhelmed by the Mexican great.

I remember seeing photos of him training. He'd take a break, and sit down with his pipe

It's the same gene the North American indians and the Japanese have, I thought it meant they had a lesser tolerance to alcohol, not a gene which made them more predisposed to alcoholism

It's the same gene the North American indians and the Japanese have, I thought it meant they had a lesser tolerance to alcohol, not a gene which made them more predisposed to alcoholism

The Aboriginals don't take too well to alcohol. They did very well for themselves before it was introduced to them but that's another story altogether

It's mildly surprising tht Lionel is still with us to be honest, he's had a couple of heart attacks already. This accident happened in a small place in country Victoria named Drouin. Lionel came from down that way so it seems he's gone back to where it all began. When he won the title and made some money he simply gave a lot of it away, as is the traditional Aboriginal way (share and share alike) Still a happy-go-lucky kind of guy, though

True. Having said that it's a hugely destructive problem every where. I can't imagine A&E looks very pretty on Friday or Saturday night anywhere in the UK.
