I honestly don't remember this fighter. or his opponents.

Aye, he used to fight on the Wednesday night Midweek Sports Special. He‘d established himself as a leading domestic heavyweight but hadn’t gone beyond that, so he wasn’t knocking on the door of a title shot. I rated him and think he could have gone further if he’d remained injury free.

A good all round boxer, not the biggest puncher but could sting when needed.
He beat future cruiserweight champion Anaclet Wamba in an early career fight. Was a small heavyweight , that would of counted against him on the world scene, Notice was part of the Terry Lawless camp of Bruno, Mason and Notice. Probably Notice was 3rd in that line up, just because of the size of the other 2.
In this day and age he’s be a cruiser, as he often was around the 200lb mark

As some have said he was in the Terry Lawless camp along with Bruno and Mason.

As of his opponents notably Proud Kilimanjaro, fought over here a couple of times and died of AIDS> Horace was British title holder and won a Lonsdale Belt, but obviously never fought Mason or Bruno. I remember the fight against Dave Garside back in 1987. Horace totally outclassed Garside and stopped him inside the distance. Another boxer Notice outclassed was Paul Lister another North East boxer. Lister got his chance by beating Stewart Lithgo from Hartlepool.

Would never have been big enough for the likes of Gary Mason.
Would never have been able to make 13st 8lbs, could do the modern day limit though

Wamba was a quality fighter

Good British champion around the same time as Bruno if I remember rightly I can't remember why he retired maybe an injury

I just see mercs post and that sounds about right , there seemed to be a lot of those in the 80s

Was pencilled in for a European title shot against Francesco Damiani in Italy which would have been a tall order.

Like others have mentioned - he wasn't big enough at the weight for the proper top guys - standing around six feet and 14 and a half stone. Good fighter and I think he won the ABA title more than once.

I always rated him. He was (and is) the best heavyweight from Birmingham since the days of Johnny Prescott, in my opinion. He got beaten by Gloucester's Harold Hylton in the 1982 ABA heavyweight final at Wembley but the ring they used that night lacked an apron and almost every fighter backed to the ropes lost his footing and went down, and some of the referees ruled those slips knockdowns. This is what happened with Notice in the first round, except that the referee stopped it when Notice slipped down because Hylton had undoubtedly started well and looked on top. Nevertheless, it was never a knockdown in a million years. Horace had to wait a year for his revenge and he destroyed Hylton in the first round in their ABA final. Hylton was well and truly 'out' and needed medical assistance in the ring. Notice was also the only winner when a combined GB team took on the USA in an amateur international later in 1983. He flattened a Yank in the first round to make the total score for the night 10-1 to the USA.
As a pro, he won the British heavyweight title from Hughroy Currie in a thrilling encounter on the Isle of Man and added the Commonwealth title by stopping man mountain Proud Kiliminjaro. He could look pedestrian at times but he was 16-0 (12) when an eye problem forced him out of the game and was still improving under the management of Terry Lawless so his departure was a real blow. Like I say, I always rated him.

also a shame that Bruno's team skirted the british title...there were always great matchups out there going as far back a Neville Meade v Bruno circa 81

I remember watching his fights on TV. He was another Henry Cooper with his weight, not big enough for heavy and too big for cruiser.

He won a Lonsdale Belt outright so at least he had something to show for his career.

even 'circa' doesn't quell the pedants.

Meade certainly was willing to entertain Bruno during this period.


also on the subject of Horace Notice getting into security after his boxing career? I remember seeing him and ned Rawlins working the energy raves for a team called 'strikeforce. in 89'

they were very good.
