Calzaghe wants to make statement
Lacy talks up Calzaghe prospects
WBO super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe is in determined mood ahead of his fight with Kabary 'the Egyptian Magician' Salem in Edinburgh (22 Oct).
"I have to re-establish myself as champion and redefine myself," said Calzaghe, who last fought in February.
"That means, as good a fighter as he is, Salem will take a beating. I am determined to do a number on him and I will knock him out, make no mistake."
Calzaghe hopes to equal Chris Eubank's British record of 15 title defences.
"Training has gone superbly, I've done all the sparring, the weight has come off easily," said the 32-year-old in his column for the South Wales Argus.
"I've seldom been more confident of putting on a big display. I've been through the routine so many times that I genuinely don't even think about a big fight very much beforehand."
Calzaghe added that he will continue to chase a clash with light heavyweight champions Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver after the Salem fight.
Salem, 36, has been a professional for seven years, holding a record of 23-3-0 (12 KOs).
Having failed to land a meaningful fight at light heavyweight following the collapse of his challenge for Johnson's IBF title, Calzaghe had to search long and hard for a viable opponent at 168lbs.
He was desperate to avoid a rematch with the WBO's number-one contender Mario Veit, a fighter the Welshman destroyed inside a round back in 2001.
Veit won a controversial split decision over Salem in Dortmund in the New York-based Egyptian's last fight.
But Calzaghe insists that the result does not affect the viability of his planned encounter.
"Even by German home town standards, that points decision in Veit's favour was a travesty and Salem will be a much tougher opponent for me," said Calzaghe.
"It was one of the biggest robberies I've ever seen. I made Salem the winner of nine of the 12 rounds and he shook Veit to his boots every time he hit him. Yet Calzaghe fails to say about the head butts
"Salem is big and strong and has never been stopped, he'll be a mean opponent.
"Not only is he tough (one of his opponents died soon after being KO'd), No need for that but he is also rough and comes in with his head low as an extra weapon on occasions." Fantasic statment

Ooh, so Salem's loss to all-time-great Veit was "controversial" - wow, Salem must be *really* good, then. :-?

Exactly, Calzaghe keeps labouring the point that Salem was robbed against Veit...SO WHAT?! Veit is shit anyway.

Indeed.

I would much rather see Calzaghe in with Eastman, Woods or even a Reid rematch than his upcomming fight with Salem.

I just can't get excited about Calzaghes fight next week at all. :(

I'd even add Brian Magee to that list - IMO Calzaghe should be stripped because he hasn't faced the interim champion. That ruling has just been made a farce.

Controvesial or not, Viet won - alot of people who I respect called it close (and most seem to think the right man won). Whoever deserved the nod, the fact Salem didn't take him out speaks volumes.

McIntyre, Pudwill, the last fellow and now Salem. Who is the worst from that bunch of talent?
