Don Curry, Julian Jackson and Buddy McGirt finally gets inducted into the IBHOF

With the announcement for the 2019 International Boxing Hall of Fame, the committee had elected Don "The Lone Star Cobra" Curry, former welterweight and junior middleweight champion, Julian "The Hawk" Jackson, former junior middleweight and middleweight champion and James "Buddy" McGirt, former light welterweight and welterweight champion, who had their recognition long overdue in the modern category. The IBHOF also elected former welterweight champion Tony DeMarco in the old timer category along broadcaster Teddy Atlas, matchmaker and promoter Don Elbaum, referee and judge Guy Jutras and publicist Lee Samuels. What your thoughts? For me, it's about time.

Nothing more exciting than Julian Jackson! (well, not much anyway)...boy could crack with the best of them!

In honor of his HOF induction I had to revisit that occasion when he Bombed out "Bomber" Graham.

hmm, well i personally wouldnt say guys like curry and mcgirt are long overdue for being in the hof. very good fighters no doubt but hardly guys who really had careers that shouldve made them locks. to me the ballot seemed pretty uninspiring this year. obviously were talking about a high level just to be on the ballot, but very few real standouts by the general hall standards

As we discussed on a previous thread, there really was not one or two guys that stood out out like in many years. There are a lot of guys fairly even.
You could make a case for Curry, Jackson and McGirt; they were all very good fighters. At their best, Curry and Jackson were great fighters. McGirt was the most consistent of the three.
Interesting to see DeMarco get in.

McGirt was helped by this being a pretty decent trainer. Curry is questionable to me. Jackson gets in on being perhaps the hardest P4P puncher.

I don't see how Jackson is deserving, he was clearly a level below the best fighters of his era. If he is deserving than guys like Florentino Fernandez, Eduardo Lausse, and Johnny Bratton should be in.

The only one I might vote for is curry. I'd vote for laciar over all of them.

Curry was great but hos greatness was brief.

That gets a bit exaggerated. I think he had 8 defenses or so. Definitely not a shoe in, but a step above the other two. I'd vote for Taylor over the other two.

Outside of Atlas, I'd say it's a pretty skimpy HOF this next year. Not to knock the inductees because they are deserving but there's not much prestige and star power. Jackson, yes, but the others no.

All good fighters who made their mark but I don't see any being HOF worthy. Curry was about there certainly on talent but falls short too IMO.
I feel there were more deserving fighters on the ballot who didn't make it like Rafael Marquez, Gilberto Roman, Santos Laciar, Ernesto Marcel, Rafael Herrera for example.

The Donald Curry that unified the welterweight title against McCrorry would have been a tough out against the best welters of all time.
I feel good for Donald getting rewarded like this. Of all the amateur fighters that got screwed when America boycotted the olympics in Moscow, nobody got shafted worse than Curry. He would have won the gold and started his career exactly like Ray Leonard did money wise.

I'd like to see Rocky Lockridge and Happy Lora to get in some day as well. Lots of very good fighters on this ballot but no "no-brainers".

He was brilliant when he took out McCrory. He looked like a sure fire p4p king

I thought Hatton would make it this time and since Darius M. didn't get selected from this group, he's just not going to get there.
Total contribution to the sport makes a difference, getting in the ibhof isn't just about being a top p4p fighter.
Being a successful trainer definitely helped McGirt get some votes.
If a fighter has an outstanding amateur career, a pretty good pro career then follows up as a successful trainer, promoter or commentator they're going to get in the ibhof eventually.

Tony DeMarco was a strange choice. There were way better choices including a guy with the same last name. Curry was a better pick, but he wasn't the most deserving either. Only JJ from this group had a very solid case.

How does Julian Jackson have a solid case? He was a full level below the best of his era and benefited from fighting in an era with many belts. In another era he would have just been another contender. He also lost twice to McClellan someone few view worthy as being in the HOF.

Why isn't mark breland in? I don't even think he's on the ballot.

I'm just taking a wild guess here but I'm thinking Breland not getting voted in might have something to do with the fact that there are numerous ibhof eligible boxers with solid overall resumes on every ballot and the hall only takes three a year.

Breland's amateur accomplishments should be enough. I don't think the IBHOF is pros only, is it?

That's what I thought. His post suggests otherwise.
