Apart from Wellborn at least they got paid well for their time

I can remember Cotto v Jennings, Pavlik v Lockett, Andrade v Rose. All had fcuk all chance but its prizefighting

wellborn wasn't with a particular promoter do it seems more his choice.
I think this will happen alot more in the next few years with dazn

Nothing wrong with it really, as long as the guy gets a payday out of it. Must be a great experience to be in the main event of a big US card, even when you know you’re getting beat.

Agreed,they're in no more danger than any other fight really,so long as they get paid then why not,if it wasn't for the multi titles on offer then most wouldn't have had the chance anyway.

Welborn has nothing to do with Matchroom.

All cases are different. McDonnell is past British title level but doesn’t headline shows in the U.K. the only time he has I think was when he fought Vargas for the title and lost fairly comfortably. I guess he choices were either fight on undercards for not great money or take a risk and fight a bearable champion for good money.

Callum Johnson’s stock actually rose I think when he fought for the title. He can come back to the U.K. now and have some decent fights (Buatsi etc.) or go back to the US given how entertaining his fight was.

Fielding was the only fighter I didn’t give any chance to winning but what’s he a world champion for if he’s not willing to take big fights. It’s been widely reported he got over £1m for the fight. If he made defences of the title in the U.K. then he would be lucky to be getting £150k plus there’s a reasonable risk he’d lose. It was his decision and it’s one I can’t really argue with given it’s likely set him and his family for life.

If you British title level or above, and an opportunity like this comes along, you have to take it.
You have to test yourself at top level and at least try to achieve the utmost.
Don't forget they are being well paid too.
We can say the same about Sibson, Dave boy Green, Henry Cooper, Brian London.
And sometimes the top boys lose, look what Randy Turpin did, dare to dream.

Barker and Macklin were reasonably credible opponents for Martinez at the time.

Yeah - Hearn took Barker to the US for Martinez (which was reasonably competitive until late) and also Geale where he won the title.

I don’t think Eddie was involved with the 2 Macklin fights but could be wrong.

What’s Crolla meant to do? Fight B/C level fighters in the U.K. or target the best where he’ll get paid the most? I would guess he’d get at least $700k for Lomachenko as both Matchroom and Top Rank will be bidding hard for it. As he’s manadatory there’s also the chance Loma will give up the belt rather than face him. Again may be part of the reason for him chasing the fight.

Definitely fight Lomachenko without a doubt,got to be in it to win it.

Wenton and Paul Lloyd.

You had witter getting a short notice fight against Judah and bizarrely, Howard Clarke against Vargas. Then you had what, ten days notice for Alexander against Harry Simon around the same time frame.

The main difference is that most came for chump change.
