Does anyone have info on a boxer Fred Magoon 1920's?

My husband and I have been searching for info on his paternal grandfather who was supposedly a boxer late '20's early '30's named Fred Magoon. Family rumour has it that he was shot by New York gangsters for not forfeiting a match? Played against Max Schmeling apparently once? Any info would be appreciated as his daughter is now deceased (78 yrs) and was the only one who had a little info on her father to say that he was this person. Thanks!

A facinating and tragic story for sure. The suggestion that he had a fight with Max Schmeling is interesting but there is no record available which shows this.
It would help in the search for any information if you could provide some further information if this is possible.
date of birth
place of birth
where he lived when he was boxing
his full name and any knicknames - he may well have boxed under another name !
Thankyou for your prompt reply!

Thanks for posting your prompt reply! Much appreciated! As you mentioned, we are trying to locate Fred Magoon's only living daughter and will try to get more info from her if possible. My husband has lost touch with her but is able to locate a cousin (her daughter) so hopefully more info will be available to us. We do want to solve this "mystery" and our child would like to know the background of her great granddad. So, as soon as we hear back, will send immediately. Thanks kindly...Valerie

Hi Red Curls
My Grandfather was Fred Arthur Magoon, He was married to Thelma Allison O"Neel.
The story I heard was that he had a fight with Joe Frazier and was actually one of his sparing partners.
I know he was a boxer and spent some time in Vancouver BC. He may well have been friends with ANGELO ERNEST
BRANCA the long time Judge in Vancouver who was also an avid boxer.
I know this because Thelma had a child by him (Angelo) and suddnely she winds up marrying another Boxer, possibly from the same club.
Let me know if this answers any questions you have. It would be interesting to know who your husband is.. sounds like a relative to me.
Cheers
Bob
