Joe Cortez talks Wilder vs. Fury knockdown count

Former referee Joe Cortez says he would have likely stopped the Deontay Wilder vs. Tyson Fury fight in the 12th round after the British heavyweight was knocked down hard by a combination from the ‘Bronze Bomber’ earlier this month on December 1 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Cortez says nine out of ten referees would have halted the Wilder-Fury fight if they had seen Fury get dropped in the same way in round 12. The referee that worked the fight, Jack Reiss, stood over a motionless Fury, and counted while hie eyes were closed after being dropped by Wilder. Fury eventually got back to his feet, but it looked like he was unconscious for part of the count by Reiss.

The question is should Reiss be celebrated for giving a count to a fighter that appeared to be knocked out in Fury’s case in the 12th or did he make a mistake in not stopping the fight. If Reiss did the right thing in counting until Fury woke up, should all referees now do the same thing for fights? If there’s a chance that a fighter will wake up before the count of ten, should referees continue to count when a fighter appears to be unconscious like Fury?

“Any referee on the planet would have stopped it when he saw the way Tyson Fury went down, but Jack Reiss, with his experience, he saw that maybe he’s going to give him a chance, because it’s a championship fight,” legendary former trainer Joe Cortez said to spam about referee Jack Reiss choosing not to stop the fight in the 12th round after Tyson Fury was seemingly knocked unconscious by Deontay Wilder. “At the count of five, Tyson Fury WOKE UP, and finished up strong in that round.”

Cortez points out that he believes that Reiss didn’t stop the Wilder-Fury fight on the spot in the 12th, considering that it was a “championship fight.” Should whether a fight is a championship level one or a regular fight have any barring as to whether a referee should stop a contest when a fighter is badly hurt? Logically, it would seem that it wouldn’t matter whether a fight is a championship level contest or not. If a fighter is hurt to the point where he’s laying motionless on the canvas with his eyes closed, the bout should be halted, period. If the referees are going to treat knockdowns such as the one that took place in the 12th round differently, depending on whether the fight is a championship level one or not, then they should have that in the rules for the fights.

“Most likely [he would have stopped it],” Cortez said in commenting about what he would have done if he saw Tyson Fury get knocked down in the 12th round by Deontay Wilder. “Nine out of ten referees would have stopped it, including myself,” Cortez said of the Wilder-Fury fight in the twelfth round.

Did his eyes close? Jack Reiss said it was one of the reasons he didn’t call it off.

When they showed Fury on the floor, his eyes were definitely opened and he was looking right aat Reiss as he was talking to him.

They were open, even if they were closed it doesn't mean he was unconcious, i've seen loads of fighters on the deck with their eyes wide open and clearly not getting up so that statement by Cortez means nothing.

I think we’ve come to a reasonable consensus that the ref did a great job in the Wilder v Fury fight.

:TU: obviously made the right call. Nobody without an agenda could have complained if he waved it off. Best part was him admitting the final round of a title fight is a different scenario. Too bad Steele didn't have that integrity. Meldrick would be in the hof.

He would have yes, still wouldn't have prevented the severe beating he took which basically ruined him at the top level.

He gave Fury 22 seconds in total which is clearly far too long. Fury was ok to continue at that point. I don't mind the count but when Fury gets up at 9.5, you don't give him 12.5 extra seconds to recover. Anyone not on a UK boxing forum would agree.

It's a case by case basis but many on here criticised Vann for throwing the towel out in the Earl katsidis fight. I thought Vann did well there.

I think Reiss was right not to wave it off and by the time the 22 seconds was up, he was right to let Fury continue. He was completely wrong giving him 22 seconds in total and anyone not on a UK boxing forum knows that but it added to the drama of the fight. Wilder probably takes him out if Reiss gave Fury 13 seconds or so which he should have.

The nerve some of the "fury was robbed" crowd have after that 22 second recovery time is pretty ridiculous

Duva was talking to him. Doesn't matter there was 2 seconds left and Steele saw his opportunity for a bonus check from king.

It looked like Steele asked him if he was ok and he didn't reply,no good Duva talking as it wasn't him in charge, also Steele didn't or may not have known how long was left in the round and you can be sure Chavez would have nailed him again if he had the chance.

TBH, whenever a boxer beats the count, no referee lets the fight continue straight away.. Most spend at least a further 5 seconds holding the boxers hands or at least telling the boxer to come towards him.. In this case, Reiss told Fury to walk side aways and then walk towards him, which DID take longer..

I don't think it was a robbery.. Nothing really happened in the opening 4 rounds and also, any other referee, not named Reiss would have instantly stopped the fight when Fury went down in round 12, Wilder would have won KO12..

I agree 100%
I'm glad the ref let it continue. But I would of stopped the fight if I was in his shoes as would 99% of all referees

I don't see any reason to revisit the ending of the fight. It appeared to this Wilder fan that Fury was alert and stayed down as long as the ref let him. He could've gotten up sooner and the Reiss did everything correct. It wasn't like Fury was taking a beating before the knockdown, was it?

Remiss did a great job, it should be taken into account it a championship contest and Fury was winning, you have to give the fighter a chance.
Ian John Lewis would have stopped it after the knock down in the 9th!
Remember Mock getting stopped by Haye? That was Mark Green, another serial offender for looking after the home fighter.

lol 'keeping it real'?

hes totally wrong about fury having his eyes shut like he was out cold, fury clearly had his eyes open and was looking alert, did he even bother to watch it?
