First of all. Happy New Year everyone. Hope all are alive and well.

Now this is NOT a Wilder-Fury thread. Don’t really want any mention of that please.

But there have been many times where a boxer just needed that extra second before they get up. Sometimes a ref will call the fight off and the boxer will kinda shoot up straight away and he’ll actually look okay.!

You might need to dig your brains a little. But the first one that came to my mind was Groves vs. Froch II..



Count yourself. By the time the ref was gonna start at count, it would have been on 3... he didn’t even bother counting.

It was a competitive close fight up until that. Groves was ahead on a couple of cards and that would have been a 10-8 round for Froch.

Would Groves have been knocked down again? Especially after the first bout was stopped, this was at Wembley, much bigger stage. You’d think they’d give them both a chance.

That’s just my opinion.

Thoughts on that?

Can anyone else think of a time a boxer could have used a ‘Jack Reiss’??

Groves could get up indeed. Probably he wouldn't have rehabilitated like Fury, but still the 2nd fight's stoppage wasn't perfect too.

Lewis v McCall 1. If Lennox had been given as much time as Fury was given (with all the checks etc), then he might well have recovered.

What the clip didn't show with Groves was that he was desperately trying to get up and the ref pinned him on the floor!

They were gone on 8. But if he had another 20 seconds or whatever Fury got, who knows.

Danny Jacobs seemed to wake up midcount just as the ref waved it off after Pirog starched him

Yeh. Ref literally kept him down.

This Fury KD and recovery has caused me to reconsider some long-held strong beliefs.

Re: fights stopped after a guy has been poleaxed but clambered up like in Lennox v McCall, my argument has always been that if the guy scoring the KD managed to land such a humdinger on an alert and not dazed fighter, imagine the damage he could do to the guy now his head is fogged, reactions dulled and the body not as responsive.

Gotta re-think that one a little (but with an asterisk in my mind that Fury did have longer than the normal - count, wipe gloves, box on - scenario)

Depends who the boxer is. Wilder was not gassed again after he KD Fury. Fury finished the round well. Sometimes you get caught with a good shot, you can get up, and long as your legs are okay, you can continue and finish the round.. even if that means survive the round.

Lets keep this real. i challenge any of you to find a fight where the ref counts to 8 and then the fighters are fighting again straight away. There is always a look in the eyes, an 'are you ok'' .... a wiping of gloves on the refs shirt, a walk towards me

we are giving Fury a raw deal here. He did everything the referee asked him to. The key thing is, only the ref could look into furys eyes when he was on his back. if the were open and not 'rolling' then the ref decided to give him every chance.

What about the Enzo fight where he got absolutely sparked immediately after an 8 count? Against Frenkel, I think. The ref wipes his gloves but barely even looks at Enzo to check he’s ok. That was the opposite end of the spectrum, of course, terrible reffing.

I was trying to think of the fight where a boxer gets knocked down badly hurt, the ref gives him a good check over and let’s him continue, he’s then knocked down again and the ref stops it at the count of 4 , the boxer questions the ref straight away and looks clear eyed , but hurt. Then I remembered Abner Mares vs Jhonny Gonzalez.

Check this, Haye gets dropped heavily at 5.45, has some uncomfortable moments towards the end of the 4th but pulls out a good punch to drop Mock, resulting in Mark Green stopping it at 13.45

If anything he could have easily stopped it when Haye went down. They both got up and acted the same way to the KD. This was clearly for the benefit of Haye winning.

There was a fight in Macau on NYE where a guy was down for "7" ref called the fight and the guy instantly popped up... Was one where he was just staying down until the count was over but still funny

That was a disgusting stoppage,haye was worse when he got dropped than mock was,mocks legs looked steady were as haye was all over the place even in round 4

Yeh, then you get Charles Martin who receive a full 10 count, only to rise on the 10 count and then complain about the stoppage. If I was the ref in that fight, i'd let him continue..

Then you get this ref..

Some praised him and some hated on him.. He even overturned Foreman's corner throwing in the towel!

Risky business overturning the wishes of the corner when they throw the towel in.
