Roy Jones Jr. vs. Michael Dokes

Roy Jones Jr. (the version that beat John Ruiz for the title) vs. prime Michael Dokes. Did Dokes have enough hand speed to not get completely outclassed in that area by the legendary RJJ and use his larger size and strength to carry the day?

Dokes had enough handspeed and power to catch and KO Jones, unless Roy would have been too safe to take the decision in a rational way.

I don't see it being close. A prepared prime Dokes would've been too much for the undersized RJJ.

No way Roy beats Michael. There were several heavys from the early 80's time period that would make Roy hesitate with their handspeed, and Dokes may have been at the top of the list. Dokes has Roy out by the 3rd round.

Dynamite Dokes stops Roy

I don't think we ever saw a prime dokes. Incredibly inconsistent for obvious reasons. His best performance might be holy field. Jones would take a series, so would Ruiz. The dokes evander faced probably stops both.

You may be right, actually. I may remember Dokes more for his potential, rather than his achievements.

What he achieved wasn't that bad, though Don King had his back.

The only controversial fight of Dokes that I remember was the extremely premature stoppage over Weaver.
Was there more that my old mind doesn't remember?

I saw that fight and I was heartbroken, as I became a Weaver fan after his fantastic last minute KO of Big John Tate. The rematch was a dud too, a draw.

One of the most premature stoppages ever.

I blame all wrong doing back then on Don King! :OhYes:

I would think Dokes would be too beastly for Roy Jones. I'm not sure RJJ could beat anyone who was a heavyweight champ in the 80s. Perhaps Berbick on one of his weird nights?

Motivated Dokes would walk through RJJ. "Too beastly," yes.

The draw with ocasio was a robbery and he got a gift in the Weaver rematch.

That was pretty bad scoring in the rematch, which made it a dud for me, in that another controversy. The fight itself had some really exciting rounds. Most ringside observers had it for Weaver. I'd have to rewatch the Ocasio fight to comment, as I really don't remember it.

As Onetimeonly mentioned, Ocasio I, though the stoppage of Lynn Ball looked kind of weird.

At Weaver rematch Dokes was rationally outboxing Weaver for the majority of the fight. I don't get, how people are so sure about Weaver being robbed, but not Dokes,

Seriously, Duke. Watch it again and score it. It was a pretty good watch so it won't suck if anything.
