Gvozdyk To Take Voluntary Before Mandatory Versus Browne

Fresh out of his lopsided points win over Badou Jack in their sanctioned title eliminator, Marcus Browne had every right to believe that next up would be a showdown with defending champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk.

While it could be the next fight for Browne, he’s not necessarily next in line for a title shot.

The unbeaten light heavyweight from Staten Island is now the mandatory challenger for Gvozdyk’s title, as Saturday’s bout in Las Vegas was sanctioned by the World Boxing Council. The sanctioning guarantees Browne (23-0, 16KOs) a title shot which he is eager to make happen as soon as possible.

Likely to Browne’s disappointment, that day won’t come as quickly as he’d like—and certainly not until after Gvozdyk’s already approved voluntary title defense.

Gvozdyk (16-0, 13KOs) won the WBC—and Lineal—crown following an 11th round stoppage of Adonis Stevenson last December on the road in Quebec City, which left the exiting champion requiring emergency brain surgery from which he continues to recover.

The 31-year old boxer from Ukraine entered the fight as the mandatory challenger, thus freeing a void at the top upon his title win.
His first defense is tentatively scheduled to take place in early spring, as previously confirmed to the WBC who gave their blessing for a voluntary defense prior to sanctioning Browne vs. Jack as a final eliminator.

“WBC light heavyweight champion Oleksandr Gvozdyk has a voluntary defense scheduled for March,” Mauricio Sulaiman explained to BS.com upon inquiry of the timeframe for his mandatory title defense. “Immediately after that bout takes place, we will order for the champion to next defend his title versus Marcus Browne as the mandatory challenge.”

He would probably have to give up his WBA Interim belt.

As a champion of one organisation he would lose his ranking with the other three.

Seems alright to me. Hope he takes on a reasonably solid voluntary opponent. I can see where he'd be a little mentally shook after what happened last time though.

According to his girlfriend and previous posts he's doing fine and recovering well. Good news

He needs a stay busy fight.
Blake Caparello would be suitable. He wouldn't lose his #1 spot and I think Blake would give him rounds for sure.

Considering the travesty of Stevenson, Gvozdyk needs to get back in the ring and get on with his career. It's voluntary defense so I agree Caparello type would be fine. He's durable and not particularly a hard hitter. Decent enough for sure.

Caparello faces domestic rival Reagan Dessaix (16-1, 11 KO's) next month. I don't think that Cap will get past the 22 year old.

My first thought was # 14 ranked Mehdi Amar. However, he has a personal death warrant signed vs Anthony Yarde (17-0, 16 KO's) in February.

Bottom line is that Gvozdyk should take full advantage of having to face a voluntary defense and make a fight as quickly as is feasible. He needs to get back in the ring.

True. But Gvozdyk didn't completely pulverize Amar like he wanted to.

# 9 ranked Sven Fornling (15-1, 7 KO's) would be next choice. Gvozdyk would get him out of there within 4 rounds.

Interesting fact : Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini was back in the ring 8 weeks after the unfortunate ring death of Deuk-Koo Kim. He went to Italy and won a closer than expected decision over rugged UK journeyman George Feeney.

He can but why fight a top 4 guy when you don't have to? He'd then have another mandatory opponent named.

The kid just came off a tragic event. It would be better for him to take his voluntary as an easier mark and do it soon in order to get back into the ring. You never know how a fighter would react to having done such damage to another fighter.

Considering they didn't make Adonis fight a mandatory for something like 5 years I don't think anyone can complain about Gvodzyk having a soft voluntary. Especially after what happened last time.

When a boxer has a voluntary, they usually pick someone ranked between #8 and #15..

I thought each sanctioning body had a range by rankings of those who are allowable voluntaries. :maybe:
