He was the top man when I was growing up and reading and listening to sports reports on almost anything. He had a magical voice when talking and a magical pen when writing that just took you into the heart of the event he was covering.
He was truly the best of my time.

RIP. I have his ‘McIlvanney on Boxing’ book (which I think is basically an amalgamation of various post-fight write-ups). Excellent writing.

I like this from an obituary on the Independents website
“Scribbler” is far too reductive a term for the wordsmith who wrote in 1980 of a Welsh bantamweight boxer who died after seven weeks in a coma having been knocked out in a world title fight: “It was boxing that gave Johnny Owen his one positive means of self-expression. It is his tragedy that he found himself articulate in such a dangerous language.”

RIP - An amazing journalist , we won’t see anyone like him again I don’t think.
The world has changed . Such a shame media has become so “dumbed down” these days with the growth in social media.
Guys with real journalistic talent can barely make a living due to reduced readers numbers / sales of quality publications .

Hugh and former Boxing News editor Harry Mullan were close friends. I watched Hugh come over to Harry at ringside once and the two didn't even say hello, they just began talking. Harry idolised the great Scot, who once wrote of Joe Bugner: "He has the body of a Greek statue - but fewer moves."

McIlvanney's death is symbolic of our post literary age. At least we still have his writings.

Read earlier by his friend and fellow journo Donald Trelford when speaking to Joe Bugner that Joe said he'd fight anyone even Jesus Christ, Hugh whipped in with 'you're only saying that because you know he'd bad hands'
