Boxing: Calzaghe faces £2m knock-out Oct 24 2004
WORLD boxing champion Joe Calzaghe faces his second fight of the week - this time a £2m divorce battle.
The 31-year-old super middleweight star and his wife Mandy, 33, appear in court on Thursday in round one of the legal fight.
Their lawyers have been arguing about the size of the settlement since February when Mandy filed for divorce.
The Welsh fighter who won £500,000 for his fifteenth successive title defence in Edinburgh on Friday night, now lives with actress Jo-Emma Lavin, 24.
She appeared alongside Lord of the Rings star Orlando Bloom in the boxing movie Calcium Kid this summer under her stage name Jamie Lewis.
Joe is reputed to have earned more than £5m for his boxing.
He and Mandy have three sons, Cole, 15, Joe, nine, and Connor, six.
But according to pals, Mandy has kept a close eye on the divorce case involving Ray Parlour, the Middlesbrough and England footballer, and his wife Karen. The Appeal Court ruled in July that Karen should receive a third of the soccer star's annual earnings of £1.2m over the next four years.
That is on top of two £1m homes, a lump sum of £250,000 and £12,500 a year maintenance for each of their three young children.
It is understood that the stumbling block between the Calzaghes has been the final settlement figure and his future earnings. Mandy's friend said last night, "This has been dragging on too long because of all the discussions about the money. But there is some light at the end of the tunnel now."
Mandy has been linked with toyboy Newport rugby player SamWaldron since her split from the world champion boxer after 10 years of marriage

They actually may give Joe an extra incentive to take on some of the big names a Light-Heavyweight and hence earn bigger money.

just read the bbc website.
"It hasn't been an awful year. I've had two defences and two wins - I've still got my belt and I'm still world champion, and 2005 is going to be my year."

I always feel that sportsmen get the shaft badly in divorce cases. I don't think it's right that someone should be entitled to a percentage of future earnings, what the fornicate for, why are people so fornicating greedy?

Sadly divorce settlements seem to be tailored to suit golddiggers. IMO, noone has a right to a percentage of their former partner's future earnings. It's total madness. I take it Joe won't be entitled to a percentage of her future earnings, so why should she take some of his?
As long as he's willing to take care of his kids, and £37,500 a year for three nippers isn't exactly bad (although i'm not sure she'll get as much as that), then that should be it. He has no obligation to take care of her if she is able to work, and has somewhere to live.

Good to see feminism has yet to make it on to the board.
Joe knew what he was doing when he started fooling around with mucky Welsh teenagers. Hardly think Mandy is a gold digger - why should she suffer a reduction in her lifestyle when her husband can't keep his trousers up.

So what you're saying is that infidelity should be punishable by having a percentage of your future earnings turned over to your partner.
How come it never seems to work the other way around then. How many times have you ever heard of a bloke trying to get such a settlement.
Of course Joe has an obligation to look after his kids, but It doesn't appear like he is shirking.
As for reduction of lifestyle, too fornicating bad, that's life for you. Just becuase you get used to living the life of a millonnaire doesn't mean you're entitled to it for the rest of your life.
There's nothing sexist about it. If anything, the notion that women need to be kept in the lifestyle they have become accustomed to is sexist. In an increasingly equal and fair workplace, women are no longer entitled to bleed men dry when they get divorced in my eyes.
Why should Joe go in there and take risks with his life and have to give a proportion of his earnings to his former wife?

Seriously, you don't think the whole thing is skewed in favour of women? Taking Parlour's missus as the example, is it fair that she should recieve two houses (£2m), £37500 a year for the kids, a £250,000 lump sum, and a further £1.6m over a four year period. That is greed. Taken to an obscene level.

James - the court of appeal decision in the Parlour case applies to both sexes - it just that men tend to be the high earner more often than woman. It simply states that future earnings by either party can be a matrimonial asset to be taken into account as part of the divorce settlement.
