Another bout in the World Boxing Super Series is coming together, with a bantamweight semi-final contest edging in the direction of a finalized date.

International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion, Emmanuel "Manny" Rodriguez, was notified that the date and, in turn, the venue for the match against the Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue, who holds the WBA "regular" title.

Juan Orengo, manager and promoter of Rodriguez, has revealed to scribe Carlos Gonzalez that the upcoming fight will be held on May 18 in Scotland. That puts an end to several months of uncertainty and clarifies the outlook of the Puerto Rican boxer ahead of the semi-final phase of the tournament.

Japanese superstar Naoya Inoue faces Emmanuel Rodriguez on May 18 for the Puerto Rican’s IBF strap in their 118lb Ali Trophy semi-final.

The SSE Hydro will be rocking as the IBF bantamweight title bout takes place the same night as Scotland’s Josh Taylor takes on Belarus’ IBF World champion Ivan Baranchyk in a semi-final of the 168lb division of the World Boxing Super Series.

It’s quite strange. As soon as Baranchyk spoke about dropping out, 3 fights have been announced..

Tickets are already selling for this. Maybe a once in a lifetime chance to see the Monster in Scotland.

A little tidbit no Japanese fighter has wob a world title fight in Europe. If Inoue wins he sets a bunch of records, including the first Japanese fighter to win World title fights in 3 continents..

The World Boxing Super Series semi-finals, including Josh Taylor's first world title fight against Ivan Baranchyk, will be shown live on Sky Sports.

An exciting schedule for the WBSS starts this Saturday, live on Sky Sports, as Nonito Donaire battles Zolani Tete with the WBA and WBO bantamweight belts at stake, while Regis Prograis also challenges Kiryl Relikh for the WBA super-lightweight title in Louisiana.

Taylor then attempts to become Scotland's latest world champion when he takes on IBF champion Baranchyk in another super-lightweight semi-final at the SSE Hydro on May 18, live on Sky Sports.

The cruiserweight semis will be staged in Latvia on June 15, live on Sky Sports, as former world champions Mairis Briedis and Krzysztof Glowacki collide in the last four, and ex-WBA champion Yunier Dorticos faces unbeaten America Andrew Tabiti for a place in the final.

Adam Smith, head of Sky Sports Boxing, said: "I've admired the talent of Josh Taylor for a while and I'll look forward to another red-hot atmosphere in Glasgow as Taylor bids to become the latest in a line of proud Scottish world champions.

Former multi-division champion Nonito Donaire rolled back the years on Saturday evening, demolishing game challenger Stephon Young with a knockout of the year candidate in round 6 of their world title contest in the coveted World Boxing Super Series tournament last Saturday evening.

Donaire now moves on to face the winner of Naoya Inoue and Emmanuel Rodriguez in the final and discussed who he wanted to face in the final.

The Filipino legend said, "Inoue has always supported me in this tournament and we have an unspoken thing that we wanted to face each other in the finals. He is an amazing fighter and I would love to face Inoue in the final and the best fighting the best. That's what being a world champion is all about."

Donaire really landed as a fighter on U.S. soil back in 2007 when he destroyed then established world champion Vic Darchinyan in 5 rounds, winning the world flyweight title and really propelled him to superstardom in a fight that he was merely looked upon as an opponent. Donaire opened up about his first world title victory on U.S. soil.

Donaire said, "When I first become world champion it was one of the greatest days in my life. I have to thank everybody who helped make that happen because it changed my life and led me down a path to have a wonderful life in boxing and in general. Everything came from getting an opportunity again."

Naoya Inoue and Emmanuel Rodriguez to vie for vacant Ring bantamweight championship in WBSS semi-final

The World Boxing Super Series and The Ring have been synchronized to this point.

In July, pound-for-pound star Aleksandr Usyk won the inaugural Muhammad Ali trophy and collected The Ring cruiserweight championship in Moscow. Two months later, Callum Smith won the super middleweight tournament and picked up The Ring 168-pound championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

For a while it looked like the WBSS bantamweight tournament would follow suit when a 118-pound spanner was thrown in the works.

Zolani Tete, the reigning WBO titleholder, suffered a shoulder injury and withdrew from a semi-final bout against Nonito Donaire and, consequently, from the tournament. The slick South African lefty is currently rated No. 2 by The Ring and, suddenly, the prospect of a Ring title fight taking place in the final was uncertain.

Donaire, currently rated No. 5, won in devastating fashion against late substitute Stephon Young in New Orleans on Saturday, but that result could not advance the classy four-weight world titleholder any further. “The Filipino Flash”, who is holder of the WBA championship, is likely to remain on or around the No. 5 spot until the tournament final.

However, on May 18, Naoya Inoue and IBF titleholder Emmanuel Rodriguez put their unbeaten records on the line in the other semi-final, which will be staged at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. Inoue, who is rated No. 1 by The Ring, is one of the finest fighters in the world today in any weight class. Rodriguez, who is rated No. 3, is an unbeaten world titleholder and a terrific fighter.

The No. 1 bantamweight versus the No. 3 bantamweight was certainly a realistic proposition for the vacant Ring bantamweight title.

“I think it is worthy,” said The Ring Editor-in-Chief, Doug Fischer. “For starters, Tete, our No. 2 contender, is unable to compete, but also because Inoue and Rodriguez have earned their positions in our rankings – Inoue with back-to-back first-round KOs against top-10 contenders Jamie McDonnell and Juan Carlos Payano; Rodriguez with back-to-back decisions over top-10 contenders Paul Butler and Jason Moloney. Rodriguez also has a 10-round victory over former two-time title challenger Alberto Guevara (2016).”

The ratings panel were consulted and, by the slimmest of margins, the bout was deemed worthy of being a Ring championship bout.

If Inoue wins on May 18, he rubberstamps his supremacy at bantamweight. If Rodriguez springs the upset, then he is unquestionably the man at 118 pounds and a pound-for-pound player in his own right. When Tete has recovered from injury, our hope is that he will challenge the winner of the World Boxing Super Series sometime in 2020.

I think it's all good. Ring have Inoue and Rodriguez legitly placed as #1 and #3. Unfortunately Tete is 'injured'.. So why not..

TBRB's rankings are much different.

With Tete out and Nonito already waiting at the other side of the bracket Id say Nery would be the only questionable issue. I see this fight as the tournament final anyway. Winner should be able to get past Nonito adding his name and the ring belt to his resume. There is a lot on the line in this fight.

whatever the rankings ppl have inoue and nery are the two best in the division

i think inoues the best, they are both offensive beast but nery is a sloppier more open fighter and not as fast either

I agree from the looks of it. They both look invincible right now. That said, Rodriguez will have a chance to prove if he belongs in the conversation. Too bad Tete fell off but Id have no problem with the winner of the tournament starting a championship line. Hopefully Tete and Nery get to challenge.

I mean, good for Nonito that he's being positive about it, but the real reason to like that fight is that it's cool for Inoue to get a chance to put a big name on his resume.
