Alberto Machado Not 100% Sure of Using Rematch Clause

Last Saturday night, undefeated Alberto Machado was viewed as a massive favorite who was easily going to retain his WBA "regular" super featherweight title and move forward to much bigger bouts.

Instead, he was battered and knocked out in four rounds by heavy underdog Andrew Cancio at the Fantasy Spring Resort Casino in Indio, California.

Machado, who is very tall, intends to have a few medial exams to determine is a move in weight to the lightweight division is required.

I guess he knows his body, but I'm still surprised if he doesn't invoke the clause. I'm even more surprised that Freddie Roach, who took over his training in 2017, hasn't had a public comment. Also sounds as if he could use a longer camp, having had only 5 weeks of training in LA.

Let’s face it, this kid is soft. We saw a boxer essentially taking a dive in the fight Sat Night. His facial expressions after every shot and his body language told me everything. The kids heart wasn’t in it.

Freddie’s probably not talking because he feels the same way. He had the better fighter in there but if a boxer doesn’t want to win as bad as he does then why waste time when you have a locker room full of ring rats looking to give all that they’ve got for the opportunity this kid just pissed away the other night. It must feel awful for Freddie to put his scarce energy into a kid that just didn’t want it.

Machado is clearly soft in the midsection but saying his heart isnt in it misses the mark. He definitely needs to toughen his gut so he can take a body shot, now that his vulnerability to the body has been exposed so badly. I havent seen all of Machado's fights but it's safe to say he has never faced such a withering body attack as the one Cancio laid on him or he would have lost before last Saturday night.

As Machado's trainer, Roach has some responsibility in making sure his fighters are in optimum physical condition. If Freddie is too debilitated with his Parkinson's syndrome to handle that then he should assign one of the assistant trainers to that job. Trainers are not just accountable for honing technical skills like Roach is known for but also for physical conditioning.

A move to 135 for Machado would probably be wise so he can add some extra muscle to his soft midsection. Now that his vulnerability has been exposed on the big stage he will be a sitting duck if he doesnt toughen up his body.

I disagree. The trouble started upstairs with a left hook and after that, Machado hands were down and he took several more left hooks. I feel that once he couldn’t get the KO in the first, he was either spent and quit due to the weight cut or he just didn’t have the heart to be in a fight like that. Either way, his stock is way down. These promoters and trainers aren’t dumb. No one wants to invest into a fighter that doesn’t fight on when they could. I think this kid clearly could have fought on but chose not to.

We can agree to disagree on this one. I can see him possibly being exhausted because of the weight cut but definitely dont think it was quitting due to lack of heart. Time will tell how his career plays out but he should definitely move up to 135 and toughen up his midsection so he wont be so vulnerable to a body attack like Cancio laid on him. We'll see...

Now Machado says he's leaning towards invoking the rematch clause. Guess he got some rest, as he said again, that he was "so tired" in the ring. Someone needs to make him stop talking.
