Superfights.

I'm just wondering what are people's definitions of a Super Fight and when is the last one we had one.

For me a Super Fight should have it all, but it is rare. They should be two fighters of similar level (and that level being good, preferably P4P top 10 at least), at similar stages in their career (e.g. at their peak) and with little or no weight differentiation - in terms of the lighter weight. E.g. Rigo vs Loma was no super fight.

I think GGG vs Alvarez probably (just) fits into the category.... although was GGG just over the top in terms of peaking?

Mayweather vs Alvarez - I guess given the result it should be a Superfight as the cards were in Canelo's favour - his weight, Mayweather's age.

I though would definitely place Garcia vs Spence in that category. .. shame it is getting limited attention.

how can you not count ringo vs loma, but count spence vs mikey as asuper fight. people remember how dominant it was so discredit the win..

Leonard/Duran, Leonard/hearts, Pryor/arguello, etc.. I can't remember the last one that had me fired up like that. Maybe Morales/PAC.

Clutching at straws a little here, Lewis v Evander?

When I think of a super fight I simply think of two fighters who are as equally matched as can be,the top of their game, best in their divisions with the fight happening at the right time :TU:

Also two guys who have the attention of regular boxing followers & general sports followers & even people who just want to watch the fight cos it's all they keep hearing about

But generally a superfight is two top tier guys having a fight in their prime,a 50/50 genuine scrap

I would say had that happened immediately after Golota and the Moorer 2 for Holyfield then yes..... but that Vaughan Bean performance wasn't good.

mikey and spence have little weight differential? id say its clearly significant....a big 147 pounder vs a 4 inch shorter guy last at lightweight and who was at 126

how does a very good guy mikeys size beat a very good guy spences size

Yeah, agreed. I'm so curious of how they will look in the ring. I suspect that Spence will look rather large compared to Garcia. I keep thinking about Joey Gamache.

De La Hoya - Trinidad definitely falls in to the super fight category. But the fight was a letdown imo.

I agree with Stu,
The term Super Fight is used too freely. Mainly to put bums on seats by promoters.
Of course, everything can be interpreted differently.
Was McGregor Wifebeater a super fight?
It made the most money ever?
Was AJ Wlad a super fight?
It stirred the HW division from a 10 year slump?
Was the CW final of the WBSS a super fight?
It unified all the belts and created one guy as top dog?

For me, a super fight is very rare. The closest in my 3 examples of recent history, only Usyk winning all the baubles makes the grade in the last decade. I think if the winner of Wilder Fury and goes on to fight AJ, that will be the second super fight this decade. If it happens this decade

You also have localised superfights that bring a particular country to a standstill such as Bruno v Lewis in the uk, I’m sure the likes of Mexico, Japan, Australia ect ect have had their own superfights that mattered more to them than the wider world

Garcia vs Spence isn't even close , I can't really think of any recently because the modern greats like Floyd either never had a serious contender or he never thought them at their peaks like Manny , maybe Floyd vs Oscar or Tyson vs spinks

Def not Tyson vs Spinks. That was never considered a "Superfight."

Yes it was spinks was the unbeaten linineal champion and Tyson the young bull , I think at the time it was the biggest fight ever money wise

No one was overly excited about this bout. We all expected Tyson to squash him.

Maybe but it was a massive fight, spinks wasn't as a big under dog as holyfield was vs Tyson

I actually doubt that. Tyson was performing like a machine when he faced Spinks. He was not nearly as highly regarded when he stepped in with Holyfield. I'm sure Evander was a deep underdog, but I can't imagine as big as Michael was.

It was 30 years ago and spinks was a big under dog but I think holyfield was more so he was considered shot ko'd by bowe rocked hard by Norris beaten by moorer .....I could be wrong but that's what I remember

Sure I saw a poster at the time billing this as 'The Fight Of The Century'

Seems like a lifetime ago now but I recall many experts tipping it as one for the ages then Spinks walked out looking like a zombie and got run over by an express train, he looked genuinely terrified from the get go. Didn't even seem to get clipped properly, just went down from glancing blows. One of the defining images of the early Tyson years that fuelled the hype of this unbeatable monster puncher but I still think to this day that a lot of it was psychological

Fight of the century?!!! I didn't remember that. Spinks went down from a great body punch the first time and a straight and awesome right hand the last time. He was def scared and Tyson said he made sounds like a girl when he got hit in the body.
