Good to see 46 year-old Oquendo keeping a lofty position despite not having fought or won in about 5 years.

But I guess they fact that he also hasn't lost in that time was factored in by the WBA rating's committee.

Oquendo last fought in 2014 and HE LOST his last fight.

Even though Fres Oquendo was treated in a ridiculously bad way by the WBA over his highly-controversial loss to Ruslan Chagaev, to the point Gilberto Mendoza’s organisation actually lost a lawsuit that the American had filed against them, I’m not even sure he deserved that title shot in the first place.

The Big O’s previous five victories leading up to the Chagaev bout came against journeyman that had (on average) tasted defeat in 39% of their contests (i.e. losing on average 17 bouts each), which is very dire!

If Fres Oquendo eventually decides to resume his career, he’ll likely enter the ring (at the earliest) being 46½ years of age and without having scored a victory for more than five years.

What’s even more bizarre, is the fact that Fres Oquendo has never defeated a top-ten world-rated heavyweight opponent during a career spanning twenty-two years, but yet he turned down a world title shot as recently as three weeks ago (for no apparent reason - or at least it wasn't disclosed).

It gets even worse, because Oquendo has retained his position as being the WBA’s second-highest rated fighter that doesn’t possess one of Gilberto Mendoza’s ridiculous belts!

WTF! :o

I’m convinced that in a couple of years it will emerge that the WBA has been an elaborate practical joke orchestrated by Chris Morris...

I don't exactly know how wrestling is nowadays but it used to be there were regional franchise owners who each had their own "world champions". This looks more like that than a legitimate sport.

But he hasn't lost since the Chagaev

Oquendo last fought in 2014 and HE LOST his last fight.
That's right.

But he hasn't lost since the Chagaev fight nearly 5 years ago.

That's a long time to go unbeaten, so the esteemed WBA rating's committee has rewarded Oquendo with a very high ranking.

Well deserved.

I'm afraid that my reasoning is probably accurate.

If you asked the WBA chairman about Oquendo's questionable ranking, he would probably babble something about the fighter's undefeated status for the past half decade.

Don't ever expect logic out of these guys.

They actually manage to make the WBC seem like a semi-legitimate and almost plausible organisation. That takes some doing !

Even putting the Oquendo saga aside, I'd love to hear Gilberto Mendacious explain what Trevor Bryan has achieved to warrant a ranking eight places above Povetkin. Maybe if Sasha had Bryan's wealth of experience against world level opposition, eh?

The WBA is by far the most corrupt and unexcusibal organization in not only boxing but all of sports.

I think you may have upset the WBO with that comment. They don't like being upstaged you know.

The WBA and WBO have things in common, you know? They like to not only include, but also elevate, deceased fighters in their rankings!
