In Elliot Worsell's piece on the crisis facing British Boxing I quote " Charles Martin played hard to get but finally opened his legs".!!!!
I might expect this on here at times but the Boxing News? I might be old fashioned but this was the most unexpected trash I've read in almost 50 years of reading it.
I only hope Matt Christie skipped over the article and missed this bit.
I'm prepared for the comments which will follow from some but I don't expect this from this 'award' winning magazine.
Mr Worsell who has become an entertaining addition to our weekly read, should no better.

I went bright red and I said to Mabel, "Quick ! Call the nurse, Boxing News has resorted to language such as I never heard since the Old King died - well I never did." Almost gave Mabel one of her funny turns so it did.
I will be cancelling my subscription forthwith.

I agree with dalcumly. The internet is the place for low-grade sexual innuendo and downright poor writing, not (to quote its cover) "The award-winning world's best fight magazine". If I want to read that kind of stuff, I can do so free of charge on a Boxrec thread. Would welcome Matt Christie coming on here and explaining why he thinks this is OK.

It is just base crap...Not sure if he is trying to sound edgy, but I buy BN because I want good writing. As has been said, if I want puerile tosh I can go to the current scene.

I must agree, very poorly worded and totally out of character for Boxing News. That’s the kind of writing which would fit in well with Nuts or Loaded.

It's not just the wording - think everyone expects to see swearing quoted if a boxer or trainer swears, for example. It's really nasty derogatory imagery.

Used to love getting boxing news,and monthly,still do now n again,but with the internet you get news as it happens so don't bother so much no more

i feel its ok...charles martin has been filmed 'out of it' on drugs maybe elliot is nodding to charles martins other life. I feel that martin did whore himself out for a title shot, he certainly grabbed the percentage and did not fight back. he is/was the poorest world heavyweight champion for decades.
Elliot is a young writer, articulate, savvy and prepared to grab attention.
in this case.....its really worked.

Mr Worsell's 6 page article contained the following sexual inclusions - 'sexy', 'honeypot', 'f***', 'd*** measuring contest', 'one night stand, fun for a night, carries too much baggage, notch on a television bedpost'. Granted some of these were direct quotes. But, back in the day, other promoters, managers, trainers and fighters, could swear like troopers but experienced boxing journalists edited what was said because they knew their readership.
( and by the way if this is the language Eddie Hearn uses during an interview which he knows will be published sums him up as far as I'm concerned)

If it’s a quote, it’s fine. But when it’s the actual author of the piece using that kind of imagery, it isn’t. Just doesn’t fit the overall content or tone of the magazine.

I rate Worsell on the whole. I enjoyed the Haye book but he does sometimes work naughty little comments into his writing. It comes across as contrived to me.

On a previous thread about Boxing News I made a direct comment about the lack of editorial oversight on Worsells articles, which are often overblown and far too long.
A good sub like Tony Connolly wouldn't have let that through. But BN staff have been cut back so much they probably haven't the time to closely police copy. My guess it's a quick scan and a spell check and then it's in the paper.

I must admit I read it and thought “that’s an odd thing to write” and then read the rest of the article and forgot all about it.
Doesn’t deserve a thread IMO.

I dont rate Worsell at all, not a particularly good writer & his previews I’ve read often sit on the fence, like he’s too worried over getting it wrong and tries to have it both ways.
