If anyone watches any of Ruben Olivares' fights, how good was his jab? Was his jab effective to set up punches on his opponents including a big left hook to the liver? Watch his fights first in his prime and come back to tell me.

I think it was very good. I think his left hand in general was excellent. He usually wouldn't really use his jab to outbox most, he'd use it more to set up the hooks and body punches but there were fights that he wasn't going out for the KO that he used it and boxed really well.
Not his best weapon but an important and consistent part of his arsenal.

Agree and Olivares' jab was his strategy to set up his knockout punch on his opponents was his number goal in his career.

Y'know, from TV/youtube I never really thought a lot of the Olivares jab, but allowing for how things can be deceiving I asked a couple of guys I know who sparred with him. Even that didn't glean a lot because Olivares was notorious for going easy on sparring partners. The best quote regarding Olivares' jab would probably come from Zensuke Utagawa, whom he beat for the vacant WBA featherweight title. Utagawa said after their bout, "I thought my countryman Shozo Saiyjo had the best jab I ever saw until I fought Olivares." So perhaps it just doesn't translate well on screen.

Thanks guys for noticing of how good Olivares' jab was. Without the jab from most punchers, they would have not score a knockout blow.
