Gorman takes on Fabio Maldonado

Gorman's opponent finally named and it's former UFC fighter Fabio Maldonado, 38 y/o, a hard hitting Brazilian who's 26-1. Certainly not a step up and definitely not a tough matchup for the 22 year old Gorman. What do you expect with 2 weeks to fight time. Maldonado has had his 27 fights since turning pro in 2002.

Gorman talks a big game, calling out Dubois, but he hasn't shown me anything to think he's special, nor will be. At least he comes to fight. Not very excited about this one.

The fight will be shown live on BT Sport.

should be a solid enough test, Gorman does everything well and a big unit (huge in person despite being 6ft3)

I know very little about Nathan Gorman, other than he defeated Kamil Sokolowski much easier than Lucas Browne did. His performances haven’t really caught my eye. They’ve been forgettable.

I have never heard of Fabio Maldonado. His resume is poor, regardless of only ever suffering one defeat.

There is no reason for anyone to be excited about the prospect of Nathan Gorman engaging in a learning bout against an opponent, like Fabio Maldonado, that has been specifically chosen to lose.

To be fair and consistent, I have the same opinion of the type of guys Daniel Dubois is facing also.

I’m not saying I dislike Nathan Gorman or Daniel Dubois, because I don’t, but they’re at a specific stage of their careers where they’re facing guys that are meant to lose and be made to appear to be far more impressive than they really are.

From what I've seen with Maldonado in his MMA fights, I can suppose, that Maldonado will just be utterly defensive/survival. So if Gorman fights similar to how he did in his last fight, he'll probably score an uneventful one-sided decision.

A lot of UK fans believe Gorman would beat Dubois.

I don't. I feel he gets stopped within 5. Gorman vs Kownascki is a fight that might capture my attention.

I've seen quite a few polls on boxing websites. Gorman usually gets about 40% of vote.

Not the majority but a sizeable number. I don't know what they see.

But those UK prefight polls always showed Bellew running about even with Usyk. So you take them for what their worth.

i think polls would surely shift a bit now seeing in how they each dealt with a common opponent in there last fights

Polls undoubtedly reflect popularity too.

For whatever reason, Brits seem to like Gorman and will cheer him on should he fight Dubois.

Boxing website polls rarely get a large number of votes, especially in forums.

Who's this 'lot of UK fans'?

I'm British, and I think Dubois wins that fight every time.

I do like Gorman, but I would be surprised if he ever gets a world title shot, even a token one. He might be gatekeeper, maybe EBU at a stretch. He's solid domestic level.

BT just trying to make these fights more relevant than they actually are. David Haye did it with his two comeback fights. Tyson Fury did it with his comeback fights. Joshua did it with Kevin Johnston and Gary Cornish.

I get why they are doing it, but your experienced fight fan doesn't buy into it. Although I do look forward to the two sharing a ring towards the end of the year (sort of like a poor mans Joshua vs. Whyte).

A lot is 40%. You don't count because you're in Dubois' corner.

A lot of fans think Garcia will win Saturday. Not the majority, but a lot.

But so far, NOT a lot of fans think that Gashi will beat Chisora.

Dubois in his last three fights has faced Tom Little, Kevin Johnson and Razvan Cojanu. All are very respectable opponents for someone of 21 at Dubois' stage of development. Each prompted a nod of approval when I saw Dubois was being lined up to face them. Fabio Maldonado does not elicit that kind of reaction in me I'm afraid.

As to Dubois v Gorman, I have a preference for Dubois as he has the power to excite, whereas Gorman doesn't, but their respective performances against Cojanu don't suggest to me that Dubois would necessarily beat Gorman. From what I've seen of him Gorman appears to be a good all-rounder, who has decent skills, movement, everything except the punching power seems decent so far. His short reach might be a bit of a handicap however.

Power isn't everything. Two of my favourite British fighters were the Finnegan brothers Chris and Kevin, neither of whom could punch but each had skill, stamina, durability and a fighting heart second to none. They beat a lot of boxers who hit a lot harder than they could. I've seen a lot of fighters down the years who are extremely effective despite lacking power so I'm not writing off Gorman at this stage although I doubt he is ever likely to make his mark at world level..

I think Tyson Fury is a prime example of that assessment. I mean he's fought two guys with arguably ATG power in Klitschko and Wilder, and he's beat (albeit for a suspect draw) both men.

If Gorman fights a smart boxing fight, he can certainly take this fight the distance. Only thing is the lack of genuine reach, which means he's going to have to have fantastic movement and get his punches away on the inside.

Oscar Rivas beat Maldonado by convincing 10 round decision late last year, so that gives Gorman a pretty good comp.

Yup. Agreed. Some folks do it so if it happens they can claim a 'great call.' Or so it seems.

After the way Dubois pummeled Cojanu in 2 rounds Gorman may be looking for a quick KO to make his fans forget that Cojanu took him the 12-round distance.

RIvas recently floored him but wasn't able to stop him and Rivas dropped the pace and the fight was pretty close after that.

He is a decent fight considering the mma experience.

At least it's a better stand in than most guys at that level would take on this notice. Weird from Maldonado though, does he see Teslenko as more beatable or was he getting paid peanuts?

Only plus side is that a can-crusher with a 17-0 record is probably going to get the loss on his record that he likely deserves. If he wins then fair play to him. Still can't believe he was ranked by WBA last year lol
