Everyone knows who was the first amateur fighter to make his professional debut by challenging for the heavyweight title . . . but can you name the first amateur fighter to make his debut challenging for any title?

No, it is not the same answer; not a trick question.

Not the guy I was looking for but a great find! -- The guy I am referring to was like Pete Rademacher, he was a great amateur and it was a competitive fight.

I am sorry I did not mean to say Rafael Lovera wasn't a great amateur, I don't know if he was or not, it is just that Boxrec made it sound like they didn't know the kid was making his debut. The fight I am speaking of everyone knew it was a great amateur going against an accomplished (later to be great) professional.

Very early in the game's history when amateurs came out of the athletic clubs; sometimes were better skilled than the professionals; certainly better fed. The fight was for the Featherweight Championship and both men were considered talented fighters. The outcome was uncertain.
