Samuel Peter Signs Deal With Salita Promotions

The last time former WBC heavyweight champ Samuel Peter had a meaningful fight, he was stopped in swift fashion by Kubrat Pulev. Peter returned from that December 2016 corner retirement loss in February of this year, when he stopped little-known 2-21 journeyman Gerardo Escobar in Tijuana, Mexico. Now, having signed a fight deal with Salita Promotions, the 38 year old is set to face a (slightly) better opponent on April 13th in Atlantic City on the Claressa Shields-Christina Hammer card at The Boardwalk.

Peter, 37-6(30) will fight another Mexican heavy in the 15-6-1(13) Mario Heredia. Okay, 26 year old Heredia is no top-ranked fighter and the man from Chihuahua is no big man at just 5’10.” Still, it’s a step up from Escobar for Peter.

Still, Salita Promotions are willing to invest in Peter, so maybe they see something. There was a time, when he was registering that scary KO over Jeremy Williams, that people really did feel Peter could be the next George Foreman. It’s surely too late for him now though. Does Peter need the money, or is he really hungry for fights again? We might not get any answers from the fight he takes on April 13th.

The only thing I can imagine is that they must be hoping they can get a big cut by offering him as somebody's victim. There's nothing left for him on the winning side of this sport.

He will be a sacrificial lamb to one of the up and coming prospects soon enough.

Beating up a string of Mexican heavyweights is not a way to gain credibility.

Maybe they're trying to position him for that "dream match" with the returning Chris Arreola!

Maybe with Shannon Briggs who says he has a fight in mid June. A lot of +40 HW's out there. Peter is what, 38?

Briggs or Arreola would actually be alright. I don't mind guys who are past it continuing on with their Boxing careers, I just wish they'd be matched sensibly against other guys at their level.

I'm of the unpopular opinion that Samuel Peter (if he rededicates himself) will do better than is being predicted around here. Peter has natural raw power ..... but he also MUST improve his cardio. We will all get a better idea of where he's at when he takes on 26 year old Mario Heredia (15-6-1, 13 KO's) in Atlantic City in 2 weeks.

He should be able to beat this Heredia character in all likelihood. How well he'd do against any ranked opponent is debatable. Aside from the previously mentioned Arreola or Briggs. Stiverne, Mansour, maybe Derric Rossy...guys like that are who he should be matched against for the time being. If he can get past 1 of those guys maybe there's something bigger still in the sport for him, but I figure he'd be 50/50 even in most of those matchups.

He probably could have gone far had he been better conditioned! No denying he had scary power, maybe not the most gifted boxer, but a better engine and conditioning he probably could have adapted his skillset somewhat with that.

Not sure he gets any further than beating up undermatched foes at this stage of his career though. The heavyweight scene is really weird right now!

Maybe that Wlad comeback does happen......

Well this has thrown a spanner in the works - the Nigerian nightmare is back and has shaken up the division once again.

Watch as AJ, Wilder and Fury refuse to fight him.

Well, he’s obviously not reclaiming a belt but if they match him correctly he can get a ranking (probably with the WBA) and a cash out fight of sorts...

Well, that did not work out very good.

In a huge upset, journeyman heavyweight Mario Heredia (16-6-1, 13 KOs) derailed the comeback of former WBC heavyweight champion Samuel “The Nigerian Nightmare” Peter (37-7, 30 KOs) with an eight round split decision on Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. The 38-year-old Peter dropped Heredia with a right hand in round three, but Heredia (2-5-1 in his last six bouts) came back to outwork Peter the rest of the way. Scores were 77-74, 76-75 Heredia, 79-72 Peter.-fightnews

It's been a mad rush for each of these promo companies to sign every freakin' hw in the world. Salita is getting the scraps.

You could call it a surprise.

But you figure that Peter is at a stage where really nothing can be considered a surprise.

He needs to retire gracefully.

How can one scorecard have it so one sided and the other 2 by a few rounds but to the opponent?

..he might as well keep on boxing if that's his only source of income, no problem with that..realistically speaking though, Peter has fought 6 times in the last 8 years losing every second time.. he might have success if matched very carefully like boxing outside of top 50... :maybe:

I'm sure Salita Promotions is shaking their heads after this dismal showing by Peter. What they expected is beyond me, really.

Anyone know the terms of the contract he signed?

Peter may have come fairly cheap, so it's no great loss to the bottom line.

He hasn't accomplished anything significant in years, so how much could Salita Promotion really expect from him?
