Great - but his oponent is just a tba so far. I hope he can have a good test and hope he can get in super shape because he was beating up on Joshua before he ran out of steam.

I think he should target Rocky Marciano, but if he is still safely dead, then Julius Francis. :TU:

PS: What's Mark De Mori up to these days?

Yay an old, overrated drugs cheat who got battered the two times he's really stepped up returns! So exciting

What card?

I thought he’d be on the Usyk undercard to build that potential future bout.

Who else is fighting on May 18 apart from Wilder?

Unless Pov is headlining his own card.

That's a bit harsh. Wlad is regarded as an ATG and he got away with murder in terms of rule breaking to beat Povetkin.

Way past his best he gives away about 5" in height, as well as considerable weight, reach and years to Joshua and even succeeds in breaking his nose. Joshua eventually caught up with him but a younger Povetkin might have made it very interesting.

A small heavyweight who could compete with the modern physical giants. The man deserves respect.

Some stupid posts. Povetkin was not a "drug cheat" tho they keep parroting this, tho even the USA court, of all places, decided that he wasn't; and Wlad's win over him was Wlad's most disgraceful fight ever. He hung on like a damn octopus and the ref should have warned him and then dq'd him if he persisted. And he was beating up on Joshua until he ran out of steam.

If you want to talk about drug cheats talk about Wilder and Joshua, but who is legitimately testing them? The body types and body growth tells the story. Povetkin weighs and looks the same as when he first started nor is he overly cut up and muscular. Compare that with the US and UK champs.

I know it's not foolproof but Joshua is randomly tested on a regular basis and has been since his UK Amateur days, and by several agencies mainly UKAD but also VADA or WADA or whatever but definitely not NADA.

Like I said, that doesn't mean it's not possible for him to be anything other than clean, but surely if he's never failed anything despite regular testing it's pretty sh1tty to assume he's a user simply because he's got muscular physique. Some people are just like that, more so when their life is spent working out.

What happened to innocent until proven guilty?

Even if that were true there is no obligation on a fighter to fight another fighter except of course if you're a champion when you have an obligation to defend your title(s) against those that covet your title(s).

It's champions ducking their challengers and unification opportunities who should be held to account, not run-of-the-mill contenders.

He was mandatory and then some sort of belt holder. It was pathetic. Don't you remember when he tripped on the tree root, cancelled and didn't reschedule the fight? Atlas publicly came out and said no wlad......

I have to admit I don't remember. I wasn't on BoxRec and I wasn't watching Boxing news videos on You-tube quite so avidly back then so it seems it must have passed me by.

He held the WBA belt for two years before he fought Klitschko. At least he did fight Klitschko, so I'll give him a pass. If I'm basically a big cruiserweight I think I might look at Klitschko and have it occur to me that discretion might be the better part of valour.

Be that as it may, it's a rare situation that was clear ducking instead of the usual beauty parlor banter you see on here. He has some solid wins, a bit more than a footnote in histories worst era

He won't make the Hall of Fame but he'll do for me. Too late now but how I'd love to have seen he and Wilder face off back when the fight was scheduled. It was one of the most intriguing and exciting match-ups in recent heavyweight history.

In my opinion obviously.

What do you mean?

October 2008: Alexander Povetkin withdraws from a December title shot against Wladimir Klitschko, due to injury caused by tripping over a tree root and tearing a ligament in his left foot.

September 2012: Povetkin became the mandatory challenger to Wladimir Klitschko's WBA & IBF belts, when he beat Hasim Rahman.

October 2013: Wladimir Klitschko easily defeats Alexander Povetkin by scores of 119-104 on all three judges' scorecards.

Why would Teddy Altas say “No Wlad”?

Ask teddy. Probably because Atlas wanted some easy paydays.

When Atlas was training him he said that Povetkin wasn't mature enough as a fighter to beat Klitschko.

Always said that he didn't just want Povetkin to fight Klitschko. He wanted a win.

That attitude eventually led to their separation.

I remain totally convinced that was a stitch-up. Meldonium was legal then it wasn’t and long after the fight was cancelled it was admitted that they couldn’t be sure the tiny tiny amount of the stuff in Povetkin’s blood wasn’t left over from when it wasn’t against the rules to use it.

Povetkin then failed a drug test for Ostarine in the run up to the aborted final eliminator with Stiverne. I have to admit, I‘m no expert but that is harder to rationalize away.

Stiverne also failed a drug test but he got given a mandatory shot at Wilder instead of having to fight Povetkin or a replacement to earn it. Some punishment, eh?

I guess Sulaiman is more scared of ‘Mafia Don’ than Ryabinsky.

Shelly Finkel also said "No Wlad". 29 year old 32 and 0 (31 knockouts) Wilder was "Just a baby" and "Not ready".

He's ready for Wlad now though :D
