So I’m having a debate with someone on twitter over the WBA Super title. He’s got on my tits a bit because he has told me he has educated me and that I’m a numpty over this subject - hope to god he posts on here so he can see how wrong he is

I’ll pose the question and you guys can answer:

When was the WBA Heavyweight Super Title created and why?

I'm usually good on trivia, but I just kinda lost track of all these goofy details when they started calling people "Super" Champion. It seems like it's been a thing for quite a while though. Even when Kostya Tszyu was the boss at 140 he was referred to as the "Super" WBA Champion while other guys fought for the "Regular" title.

Lewis was stripped after agreeing to fight WBC challenger Michael Grant instead of John Ruiz. Ruiz challenged this decision in court on the basis of a clause in the Lewis–Holyfield rematch contract which said Lewis's first bout as undisputed champion would be against the WBA's number one contender. For this reason, the WBA created the Super title.

I thought it was created when Wlad beat Haye.

I think that’s when the regular was created. Povetkin vs. Chagaev.

I didn’t think it was that faaar back.

I'm with RKO on this. Pretty sure it was created after Wlad unified when beating Haye. He was upgraded to Super Champion and the WBA regular became vacant and I think picked up by Povetkin.

Why? I haven't a clue what the reasoning behind it all was.

I thought it was a WBA thing that they "upgrade" a champion who unifies the title with another ABC body's title? They then also Chuck in a "regular" champion, such as Rocky Fielding was and Manny Pacquiao is.

Yeah it's usually after a unification.

See http://www.wbaboxing.com/wba-super-cham ... LRgFMKotfE , for the version according to the WBA themselves from 2009. They attribute their bright idea to Lennox.

I think this "definition", given a status and the impetus appears to be to allow them additional time for mandatory defences, given they also have other titles to defend, isn't the issue. It seems Lennox's idea to recognise a "Super" champ or a unified champion is a sensible one.

The issue seems to be that the WBA then decided to create either a new "super belt" (for exacmple at heavyweight, in 2011 - Wlad vs Haye) and then kept the "Regular" belt going as it were or vice versa. It's hard to tell since according to boxrec there was some "Super" title contests well before that 2009 article where the idea appears to have been outlined :maybe:

I'd say that Lewis put the idea to them well before 2009, probably when he was their belt holder or in that period after.

I’ll bring this back to save me making another thread.

What’s the most losses on the record of a current world champ?

And what’s the most losses on a record of any reigning champ ever? (I don’t know this one)

Yes and he only has 7. Its tough and the top.

It will likely be someone from the turn of the century, or if there was ever a really really big upset.

More recently Steve Robinson also coined the moniker Cinderella Man, he lost 6 of his first 11 bouts.

And Johnny Nelson had lost 12 fights before starting his WBO reign against Carl Thompson.
