Therapeutic Use Exemption (TUE)

For a few months now boxers have been slinging TUE claims - do you think in an age of transparency when it comes to drugs we should know what athletes have exemptions for?

Test can be prescribed is levels are low

Absolutely yes.

Dodgy (often foreign e.g. UAE) doctors would then come under more scrutiny for their dubious prescriptions.

So for example if an athlete has low testosterone - how do you determine how much T to give this is an utter farce (legal way of cheating the system)

What has really annoyed me is when Hearn is questioned about TUEs he just brushes the claim off with "my athlete is tested several times a month" - that does not excuse he already has TUEs

It's so easy to abuse the TUE system and becomes easier the more money you have too. All you need is a dodgy doctor with a prescription book and a working biro.

This is the elephant in the room. If a fighter has a legit reason for needing a TUE, why not admit this and explain how and why you need it and what is being taken?

Clearly AJ has a TUE for something, there is far too much evasion and refusal to answer this with a definitive "no" when asked about it.

The TUE system has been an issue across various sports for years, Bradley Wiggins (cycling) and Simon Biles (gymnastics) have both been under suspicion for abusing the system.

The problem is that the TUE system was put in place with the good intention of allowing people with genuine medical issues to compete on a level playing field.

Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has suggested getting rid of them completely, not surprising considering how many of his colleagues seem to suffer with severe Asthma

That probably is impractical, but making every TUE granted public knowledge should be a necessity.

Mayweather put a clause in the contract he sent Pacquiao that any TUEs he got didn't have to be disclosed. Pacs team completely rejected the clause so Floyd removed it.

Low and behold, after the fight Team Mayweather disclose to team Pac that Floyd got a TUE for an illegal IV drip after his weight cut.

The real question is: how many fighters allowed Floyd to retain that part of his contract: to use undisclosed TUEs? How many TUEs has Floyd had in his career. As far as we know, in the only fight he had to disclose it, he obtained 1.

I guess elite sports recruit from Asthma support groups, well you'd assume so with the amount of sufferers in the top of sport.

I wonder what the percentage of asthma sufferers there are in the world and the percentage in elite sports compared.

^ good question to ponder over on this sunny sunday, we will all be surprised when we find out how many boxers take TUEs (imagine an elite athlete taking excess testosterone) !

The National Lottery and distribution of funding played a big part in the emergence of TUEs in British Sport. The orgs running British Rowing, cycling, 'amateur' boxing and athletics suddenly had a bunch of pro athletes to deal with plus a plethora of management and support staff that all needed paying. Their careers depended on results, and any edge was found in order to stay on the lottery gravy train.

My mother in law suffers with Asthma, she struggles walking more than half a mile before stopping to get her breath back.
Maybe she should buy a bike and start racing top level opposition over hundreds of miles, it seems to work for everyone else.

You have to operate within your natural Limits, if having asthma or low testosterone stops you from becoming an elite pro athlete then tough.

It seems fairly obvious to me that if you are already at the upper levels of professional sport then your asthma and low testosterone arent a problem or you wouldn’t have made it into the “elite” in the first place.

TRT is common place in America and several elite UFC fighters were getting testosterone boosters due to low testosterone levels . Laughable !

According to an article in Cycling Weekly from December 2017, 40% of the GB Olympic squad from 2004 we’re taking medication for asthma compared to 8% of the general population.

Take a bow sir, you might remember trt vitor belfort (the before and after images and performance was HUGE) !

I often wonder what has AJ got an exemption for - Whyte has mentioned it a few times now (there needs to be more transparency)

Most definitely all tue' s need to be public knowledge.
If we get to read all of the people that fail tests then we need to know what people are taking in order to receive a tue and the reason they are taking it.
It only seems fair

I agree. It just seems like certain people can have an advantage for undisclosed reasons

In fairness- being a long distance cyclist and having exercise induced asthma seem perfectly compatible........

They are pal and the best thing is (for the athlete) the exemption are never revealed to the public!

I almost feel like boxers getting busted for softish PEDs like clenbuterol or stanozolol are less sinful then these TUE abusers!!

Cross-country skiing seems to have the same co-incidental problem as cycling. The all conquering Norwegian team has a disproportionate amount of asthmatics. Perhaps the coaches hang around the hospitals to find the young folk that can’t breathe properly....

I think as a professional athlete you have to be open about any medical exemptions. If you want to keep them private then don’t take a job as a pro athlete.

It’s even worse when we consider the transgender type athletes and the testosterone level issues there.

Caster Semenya clearly has way more testosterone than her competition and it shows in the way she destroys them with little effort.

Her testosterone levels have been kept private but it’s clearly not a level playing field
