Edgar Berlanga

I haven't seen much of this guy, but I really like him. Anyone know much about him? Is he still being guided by Evander Holyfield?
when are you fighting next?stevekrazy wrote: ↑27 May 2019, 10:55 He's my stablemate, same trainer and manager
Very skilled, accomplished amateur, current KO streak wasn't 'expected' but he's improved tremendously since turning over
Unsure when he's fighting again at the moment but they're looking to step it up... Barboza and Garcia were brought in to give him rounds. He signed with Top Rank before his April 20th fight.
Who do you guys suggest as good fights... journeyman, proven chin wise that would realistically take the fight for reasonable pay?
well, he cant compare to you but hes not bad either

Great assessment.. Holyfield's squad were matching him up very well but he still blew the competition out the water... Top Rank's first two assignments for him stood no chance. I'm presuming, however, that it was to make up for lost time while getting some highlight reels, they'll look to get him rounds now for sureTheBeast wrote: ↑27 May 2019, 21:02 I was first impressed by him vs Gallegos... the punch selection showed maturity and confidence... nice fluidity in his timing too
The body punching early in a fighters' career is always a good sign...

But after that i can see some punch in his regular arsenal having success at the level he is at now but that need to be refined for future step ups.
I like how he improved his jab... he always threw is in the past but it was more a set up punch or a distance gauger... It was an efficient tool last weekend.
I see nothing terribly wrong for him so nice progression, some intriguing skills... with some good matchmaking and teaching/refining, he is one to keep an eye on as far as his evolution.
You're right!! He's got some solid amateur credentials.stevekrazy wrote: ↑27 May 2019, 10:55 He's my stablemate, same trainer and manager

Cool. I wish you well! At school and in the ringstevekrazy wrote: ↑27 May 2019, 21:32My pro debut date is almost official, I'll share that information once everything is complete! Delayed that due to school commitments

Oh ya, may well, I agree, though they both have 2nd and 3rd in national amateur tournaments, results that you call 'solid amateur credentials' for Eddy even when his were just at junior levelsBest Coast wrote: ↑17 Dec 2019, 00:15margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Dec 2019, 00:01 2nd and 3rd in national tournaments, kinda like Sonny 'Nothing of Note' Conto![]()
Sonny Conto.
The only thing Conto has going for him is what Ali called "the complexion to make the connection". Berlanga will go much farther as a pro than Conto.
I dont know what your source of amateur records is but if you check the date at the link I listed above you'll see that tourney was held January 2013. Since Berlanga was born in May 1997 he was only 15 then.margaret thatcher wrote: ↑17 Dec 2019, 00:54 The guys in that tournament are all 96-97 born guys, he was fighting in his expected class. But I agree, 2nd and 3rd in the major national tournaments like Edgar and Conto did counts as respectable amateur background, whether junior or senior
I'm glad you agree Maggie that what's respectable for Naz is respectable for Berlanga. But I still dont think too highly of Conto, because super heavy is currently one of the USA's more shallow talent pools, both in the ams and pros.USA Youth National Championships

Your link says 2013 at the top, but then lists 2014 for all of the dates and in the URL. Plus look at the other guys in the tournament like Charles Conwell, Shak Stevenson, etc. All 96 or 97. The guy that beat Edgar was about 6 months older only. Edgar should do well as a pro but hopefully we see tougher tests soon!Best Coast wrote: ↑17 Dec 2019, 01:12I dont know what your source of amateur records is but if you check the date at the link I listed above you'll see that tourney was held January 2013. Berlanga said he came into the fight determined to keep his first-round knockout streak going in honor of his late cousin, Anthony Santana, who he said was murdered during training camp. “Next fight I want to go more rounds, but I wanted the first-round knockout for my cousin,” Berlanga stated. “I want to be the one to carry the Puerto Rican flag and represent the island in New York.”
