Marvin Hagler has just made 65 years, top5 MW of all times and I was just wondering today and thought why didn't they fought each other since both were MW their entire career with 10 years age gap among each other at that time.

Supposedly a fight took between 1975-1977, Hagler raising with his ~22-23 (35-2) and Monzon with ~34-35 in (his prime maybe?!?!, with 87-3) who would you think would win and why?

* I would vote for Monzon (points), IDK, it is difficult to imagine. IMO because it would be like (in modern days considering age, grade/rating, experience and prospecting) GGG vs Christian Mbilli; Erislandy Lara vs Erickson Lubin; Paquiao vs (any of: Josh Kelly, Mario Barrios or Kudratillo Abdukakhorov).

Monzon by decision. Too skilled, collected and methdical to be outboxed/outfought.

Hagler clear points, too fast and versatile.

At his best (the guy who fought Hamsho twice, Sibson, Hearns), the Southpaw Hagler by a fairly wide decision.

And I can't think of a Southpaw Monzon ever faced.

Carlos Monzon by decision. He is not knocking out Marvelous.

Duran wouldn't have lasted 5 rounds with Monzon. And Ray wouldn't have been able to play Jedi mind tricks with Carlos. Carlos by 8-7 decision, unanimous or split.

Admittedly I've not seen much tape of Monzon though I've heard much about him. RING ALMANAC years ago had him #3 middleweight of all time. I think Hagler was #4 and LaMotta #5.

I don't think it'd be a fight that ends on a stoppage unless some freak occurrence happens. So here we have a 15 round battle, which goes in stages. First four rounds is all Monzon, the next four is split between the two, the next four is another split between the two, and the final three rounds Hagler goes for broke.

Verdict is read, "Winner by split decision... Carlos Monzon!", to which Hagler looks disgusted and in the post fight conference says he should have been given a draw at least.

LaMotta at number 5 is crazy, I'm not sure he was top 5 in his own era.

Considering him & Robinson & Burley were oftentimes avoided by most of the main players and had to take fights at different weight classes or matches that were irrelevant to stay busy, he certainly was a top five middleweight in his time.

If he was around today he'd of been a Super Middleweight, because a large chunk of his fights were at Light Heavyweight. The really important matches were at 160, but he basically competed 165-168 pounds most of the time. Sometimes he weighed more.

-The first man to beat Robinson, and you can argue he got robbed in one of the rematches. Five fights. All of them competitive as hell.

-Wins over guys like Bob Satterfield & Bob Murphy demonstrates his toughness to overcome physically superior opponents. With modern middleweights being essentially small cruiserweights who dehydrate LaMotta wouldn't have had any problems with the likes of Alvarez.

-Marcel Cerdan, Europe's greatest middleweight. Tiberio Mitri. Laurent Dauthuille. Holman Williams. Tommy Bell. Fritzie Zivic. Tony Janiro. Tommy Yarosz. Etc--- and he beat many of them multiple times.

-Its not a secret, just like Archie Moore, LaMotta was frozen out of the title picture for a couple of years because he wanted to do things "his way" instead of the mob's way. Even when he caved and threw a fight with Billy Fox (1947) to get that title shot, he still had to wait two years (1949). How much more he may have accomplished had he not been forced to dick around with lesser fights will always be something to wonder about.
