Got me thinking about late replacements and going on to beat the champ. Can anyone think of any?
I'm not sure if Michael Bentt was a replacement for Tommy Morrison?

I don't think so, he was just an 'easy' defence!
Tim Tomashak was picked out of the crowd to fight Morrison, after a good few pints of beer too!
He didn't win though!

Bonecrusher Smith came in on seven days notice and whacked WBA champ Tim Witherspoon in a round, securing a million dollar payday versus Mike Tyson.
And where did that happen? Madison Square Garden!

Witherspoon later admitted he took a dive in that fight to get out of his contract with Don King

Definately lying but one of those fights where the three KD rule was silly...... another was Benn vs Barkley.

I actually watched the film recently about how Tim was stitched up cash wise,he earned nothing to fight Bruno and admitted he was was tied to King only as champ.if only he could have been a lot more dedicated he could have been a very good long reigning champion after leaving King.

The first one I remember was Steve Cruz. No one expected him to beat McGuigan.

If you want to see horrific dive acting, watch Witherspoon in Denmark against Brian Nielsen. Awful!
He was certainly demoralised by Don King's shenanigans, but ultimately he was trying to knock Bonecrusher's block off with hail marys, and also trying desperately to hold and spoil, which isn't the behaviour of someone intending to lose in my opinion. I think he must be embarrassed by the result.

From a fading memory...........didn't Kings alleged influence over the rankings push Tim down to something like 17th and way out of the championship picture for a couple of years?

Only he really knows, interesting interview with Witherspoon below, he talks about the Smith rematch around the 15:40 mark

He was in the wilderness for a decade after he left King, who had a monopoly on the division. He took them to court for money owed but settled for 1m in 1993.
He blew the money in a matter of months and was broke again. Oh, Timmy!

Wiki says plumber but either way it was an upset.

Manny Pacquiao was a late replacement for Lehlo Ledwaba’s IBF Super Bantam Title at about a fortnight. (I think so anyway, wish there was a way to check these things.)
Jim Lampley couldn’t even pronounce Pacquiao’s name right. He battered Ledwaba anyway and the rest is history. Am I right in thinking he moved up a weight division or two for it as well?

Who did Bonecrusher replace ? i thought it was just a case of Witherspoon not wanting the fight as he was ill,i'm probably wrong though

Tony Tubbs pulled out. Either with an injury, as he claimed, or because he wasn't happy with the money (more likely some journalists thought).
