Which HW boxer had the most similar style to Andy Ruiz ?

I have been thinking about this issue since last Saturday, and I can not find out the proper answer ?

Is AR's boxing style really unique ?

Solis, maybe a little bit ?

What do you think ?

I mean he's a counter puncher primarily. He doesn't really have the same approach as a James Toney, but he usually is looking to do his biggest damage with counter shots at least.

What do you see that's unique about his style? I don't see anything particularly unique myself. Fast hands and ring smart would be my take in Ruiz, lots of fighters have had those qualities

I'd say Povetkin. They are of similar height and both are front-foot fighters who apply intelligent pressure. Ruiz is more of a counterpuncher but both use their boxing skill to remain in the pocket without getting banged up. Povetkin relies more on technique whereas Ruiz relies more on his hand-speed (not that Povetkin is slow of hand nor that Ruiz is short of technique.)

Both gave Joshua big problems but Povetkin is ageing and slipping whereas Ruiz is in his peak years.

he basically comes forward, and offensively a lot of the time waits for his opponent to throw, then unleashes quick looping combos

actually in a way he reminds me of a more aggressive and harder hitting ed chambers

Ya know what. I think you nailed it. More aggressive, harder hitting Eddie Chambers is the closest I can think of to a good description for his style.

I don't know that I'm suddenly gonna see him as a puncher exactly off of this one win either though. Joshua was VERY stupid defensively as well, and set himself up to be nailed with big shots. You don't have to be a big hitter to knock a guy out that's doing that.

Ruiz's style is more heterodox than Povetkins, I mean about some strange angles and pretty unpredictible rhytm, escpecially the change of inside/outside game.

Would his "modus operandi" be too much for the skillful fighters (let us say Fury or Usyk) ? I don't think so.

Fury is enormous and extremely mobile. I think he is a nightmare for Ruiz and a very unpleasant dream even for Usyk
unless the ring was at the smaller end of the spectrum then it could be interesting between Fury and either of them.

p.s. I'd not encountered "heterodox" before I had to look it up :TU:

He's all I could come up with at HW who remotely reminds me of Ruiz.

I don't think it's too bad.

I never thought Mesi was a terrible fighter as so many insist.

He was a bit brittle. If he had the physical toughness to match his skills, Mesi could have been a legit contender.

He was in one war (Jirov) and it did him in. He never really recovered from it.

I think he came back after a long layoff, didn't look too good, and retired.

He never should have returned after Jirov. It was amazing Mesi survived the final 2 rounds.

It was amazing Mesi survived. Period.

Yeah, ill advised comeback. He was never the same.

No, he looked very good after he came back but the problem was he was fighting against doctors warnings not to, and they had suspended his boxing license in most states because he sustained brain injuries in the Jirov fight (which he disputed). He has since gone into politics in Buffalo, NY where he is very popular. I remember seeing him in Madison Square Garden fighting in the Golden Gloves, which he won. He retired witha 36-0 record, 29 KOs.

He was brought in because he most closely resembles Jarrell Miller's style.

I think you are stretching that list a bit. Some of those guys will never be much.

No of course they won't all succeed. You can't get a gallon of liquid into a pint glass, but when we look at the top ten or twenty in years to come I imagine a good number might have got a mention from Valmar or from me in this thread.
