Carl Frampton vs. Emmanuel Dominguez - 10 August 2019 (Cancelled)

Carl Frampton will be in action against an opponent still to be determined in a headline fight for his new co-promoters Top Rank Boxing on August 10 on ESPN+. Frampton (26-2, 15 KOs) will possibly be fighting at Madison Square Garden in New York or Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, according to Dan Rafael.

Frampton should fight a good opponent on August 10

Top Rank won’t be doing Frampton or the boxing public any favors by feeding him a soft job in his headline fight on August 10 on ESPN+. U.S fans have to pay $4.99 each month to subscribe to ESPN+ to watch boxing, and they’re not going to be pleased to see Frampton competing in the main event against someone that is completely over-matched. Frampton needs to at least be facing someone that has a chance of beating him, and not just a punchers chance.

We saw that with Frampton’s match against Luke Jackson last August in Belfast. Frampton blew out a guy that looked like he didn’t belong inside the same ring with him on the night.

Jackson looked terrible in that fight, and it was disappointing to see Frampton taking on such a low level opponent. Since this is Frampton’s first fight with Top Rank on ESPN+, they need to put him in with someone that give the fans their money’s worth.

Top Rank should consider pitting Frampton against one of these contenders for August 10:

– Jessie Magdaleno

– Eduardo Ramirez

– Michael Conlan

– Tugstsogt Nyambayar

– Jesus M. Rojas

– Toka Clary

It’s unlikely that Top Rank will put Frampton in with any of those guys, because they’ve got some talent. Frampton can probably still beat a flawed fighter like Conlan, but the rest of those contenders would give him issues. Ramirez, Nyambayar, Rojas and Magdaleno would all likely beat Frampton at this point in his career.

Thought's on who he should fight? and Who you reckon he'll end up fighting.

It'll be a tomato can then fed to Valdez later in the year I imagine, Valdez not a good fight for Frampton at this stage.

Mick and Carl both said they will never fight.

Think it will be a WBO too 15 to prepare him for Valdez, he’s mentioned Valdez in every interview for a while.

Hope he does it.

The former two-division titlist from Belfast, Northern Ireland will headline the August 10 edition of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN+, which BS.com has learned will stream live from the Liacouras Center in Philadelphia, Penn.

ESPN.com senior boxing writer Dan Rafael was the first to report Frampton returning to the ring and the United States on that date.

An opponent has yet to be named for the occasion, but the intention—beyond it serving as Frampton’s official debut under the Top Rank banner—is to build towards a showdown with unbeaten featherweight titlist Oscar Valdez later this year.

Interestingly, Frampton’s first career fight in Philadelphia will carry another featherweight fight where an opponent is needed.

ESPN.com has reported that the evening’s chief support will feature Jessie Magdaleno, who will return to the Liacouras Center for the first time since losing his 122-pound titlist to Isaac Dogboe in this very venue last April. He has since rebounded with a pedestrian 10-round win over Rico Ramos this past March.

Gave up his European belt when Kid Galahad became mandatory. Constantly gives Kid Galahad abuse.
If only wee Carl would fight him.

Why?

I think to myself that if a guy has only X amount number of fights, why waste one on a boring, non-entity like Galahad.

I liked a podcast defending the argument that we do not want Loma wasting time with the likes of Crolla. Hearn gave everyone shite over that and the podcast said - its like being given an amazing, futuristic laser weapon, with just 10 shots in it and you can do anything with it at all, with no repercussions and then taking it outside to blow up a cardboard box.

Don’t think to many TV companies will be lining up Kid Galahad after Sat night (and I Think he won) as the fight stunk the building out and nobody wants to watch WWE wrestling type fights grappling for 30 mins of the 36.

Warrington is the Ring no. 2. Galahad just boxed him in his hometown and won the fight on most people's opinion.
Anyone who thinks that Frampton will fight a better opponent than Galahad will be sorely disappointed. The opening post doesn't think Frampton will dare go in with Toka Clary who just lost to Galahad.

Wish he’d fight Magdaleno. Think Valdez-Frampton and Warrington-Santa Cruz are two great fight for the end of the year. Think they’re actually the best two match ups out fo them four fighters. LSC/JW has crazy written all over it, probably a 170 punch per round affair.

In fact Frampton told confirmed on his weekly TKO podcast that one Mexican in particular is in the frame. The proposed opponent’s style doesn’t twin identically to the reigning world champ whom the 32 year old hopes to face before the year is out, but is similar enough.

“We are looking at a Mexican opponent. There were a few mentioned. I can’t say names yet until it gets over the line, but the guy it looks like it’s going to be isn’t really that similar to Valdez, but similar enough,” Frampton explained.

While it’s clear Team Frampton hope to achieve some form of Valdez preparation when the Belfast fighter makes his ring return one of Ireland’s greatest is focused on the job at hand.

Frampton suggests victory live on ESPN+ come August 10th won’t be enough. The Jamie Moore-trained fighter is adamant he has to register a performance of note.

“It’s about the win, it’s about looking explosive and getting the win, a good win and then thinking about Valdez after that. I have been pretty much promised and it’s nail in, that if I win this fight I’ll be fighting Oscar Valdez for the World title before the end of the year. But I need to win well, so I need to get passed the opponent that I can’t mention yet.”

Frampton has Mexican previous. His first taste came back in 2012 when he out pointed Raul Hirales. Former WBA super flyweight world champion Hugo Fidel Cazares was stopped at the Odyssey two years later, while the late Alejandro Gonzalez Jr gave ‘The Jackal’ a scare on his American debut. Mega fights with Leo Santa Cruz played out back to back before Horacio Garcia came to Belfast for Frampton’s first fight with his new team.

Former two-division world titleholder Carl Frampton's fight on Aug. 10, the first of the co-promotional deal he signed with Top Rank in March, will come against Emmanuel Dominguez, Top Rank announced Tuesday.

They will meet in a scheduled 10-round featherweight fight in the main event of a card on ESPN+ (main card at 10 p.m. ET with preliminary bouts beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET) at the Liacouras Center on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia.

Frampton, the 2016 consensus fighter of the year, who has won world titles at junior featherweight, where he unified two belts, and featherweight, will look to bounce back from a competitive decision loss challenging Josh Warrington for his featherweight world title in December.

Top Rank, which co-promotes Frampton with allegedly, hopes to line Frampton up for a title shot against Oscar Valdez later in the year, as long as he defeats heavy underdog Dominguez.

"Dominguez is a tall, young, hungry featherweight, so I'll need to be on my game," the 5-foot-4 Frampton said of his 5-9 opponent. "The premise of an Oscar Valdez fight is dangling in front of me, so I want to go out and show the world that I've still got what it takes to be a world champion.

"Winning is always the most important thing, but I want to do it in style. It's great to be boxing stateside again, and Philly, in particular, has so much boxing history. I won't disappoint."

Frampton (26-2, 15 KOs), 32, of Northern Ireland, has boxed three times in the United States, including both of his memorable battles with Leo Santa Cruz in world title fights in 2016 and 2017.

Dominguez (26-8-2, 18 KOs), 25, of Mexico, has won two in a row, albeit against sub-.500 opponents, since suffering a third-round knockout loss to Jordan Gill on March 2 in England. He is aiming to wreck any notion of a Frampton fight against Valdez (26-0, 20 KOs), 28, of Mexico.

"Carl Frampton is already looking ahead to an Oscar Valdez fight, which gives me added motivation," Dominguez said. "I am not a stepping stone. I am coming to Philadelphia prepared to ruin Carl's plans."

Top Rank also confirmed that Philadelphia heavyweight Sonny Conto (3-0, 3 KOs), Philadelphia featherweight Donald Smith (9-0, 6 KOs) and Puerto Rican-born, New York-based middleweight Edgar Berlanga (11-0, 11 KOs) will appear on the undercard against opponents to be determined.

Although the deal is not quite finalized, former junior featherweight world titlist Jessie Magdaleno (26-1, 18 KOs), 27, of Las Vegas, is supposed to appear in the co-feature against an opponent to be determined. The fight will mark Magdaleno's return to the arena where he lost world title by 11th-round upset knockout to Isaac Dogboe April 2018. Magdaleno has won his only fight since, returning from an 11-month layoff to win a unanimous 10-round decision against former junior featherweight titlist Rico Ramos on March 23.

They need to make Frampton look good and dangerous so people think he has a chance against Valdez.

He’s looking to cash out I would imagine. Which is fair enough given he’s the twilight of his career.

I think Frampton is 'just' past his peak. He's not finished, but he needs that one last world title shot, to earn the big payday at least. He's still very competitive against ANYONE in the featherweight division IMO.

But you're right, he's gonna be made look good. He hasn't fought primetime in the US since July 2016, when he lost to LSC, in what was a close fight. Only hardcore US fans wil remember him. Showtime numbers were not THAT good.

Hmmmm I’ve been a big fan of Frampton since he was a prospect. But I’m not so sure he’s still got it given the one sided nature of the Warrington fight.

But styles make fights and maybe he has a great performance left in him. I think for all fighters there comes a point where you think “eff this”
And mentally something goes. You don’t put as much into training, you can’t “go to the well” in fights and go through the gears to push yourself them extra one or two percent which can make the difference at top level. I am interested to see Frampton vs Valdez but I just think he’s already for one foot in the retirement door.
