The following questions ( I have the answers) were published Feb,26, 1944

Q1. What famous fighter never wore a headgear in training nor any form of mouth of mouth teeth protection either in training or in an actual contest?

Q2. What heavyweight champion has been knocked down more than any other heavyweight champion and in turn has knocked down or knocked out more challengers?

Q3.what famous heavyweight knocked his opponent down, then stopped over and lifted him to his feet to the cheers of the crowd for a sportsmanlike act – then knocked him down again as he held him up to the boos of the crowd.

I was sure it was big Primo, Dempsey knocked out plenty was it him? Cant remember him being down often though.

..the fooler in the "most knocked down etc " question is the word "challengers". If it were total fights it would probably be carnera...just on his knockdowns alone against baer...and the many knockout scored in his career. the word challengers...if it applies to both statements would be joe louis.

most of the early 20th century champions fought without a mouthpiece, as they hadn't been invented yet.

i forget the third question and i'm not going to check back....but if the champion who picked his opponent up was a heavyweight, my guess would be either john l. sullivan...or jack sharkey... the latter just because he did a lot of nutty things like that.

Q1= John L Sullivan
Q2=Jack Dempsey(doesn`t he hold the record for the most KO`s of any of the champions before the age of 25)
Q3=Probably Dempsey again...

Answer is probably Len Harvey, but in reality the vast majority of 20s British fighters didn't. Few of them were still boxing in the 40's as was Harvey though.

I'm guessing it's a fighter from the late 20s/30s or later else there'd be nothing out of the ordinary about them not using a gum shield and head guard. Could I have another clue please? What weight division did they fight in?

.....the "not the infrantry" suggests dempsey... a reference to his not serving in the army...but the "light" hints at a light heavy...as in 'not the light inftantry" but in the light heavy.

why do i pick at these things so much? i'll go with dempsey.

It's definately not Dempsey, i've seen footage of him sparring with a head guard on. I wouldn't have picked Tunney, simply because he seemed to embrace the new era of boxing in his outlook and his whole fighting philosophy was about not getting hit or injured in the ring. The clue seems to suggest it's him though!

Answer ; Gene Tunney. “ never in my ring career” Gene told me “Have I ever worn any form of training headgear or any protection for the mouth. I wanted to know what to do when I was hit and hurt. You can’t learn anything like this wearing a protecting head guard – or a guard for your mouth and teeth. I was hit around the head more than once with punches that jolted and I had a bleeding mouth more than once in training.But I never believed in any form of protection in training that didn’t apply to an actual contest”
