talk of defensive master dimmy kudryashov doing shoulder rolos made me think, who else besides floyd can/could do this effectively at a high level

it just seems like ive seen it botched so many times, berto trying it vs guerrero stands out as one of the worse, basically it led to this

Ian napa..

in my opinion Ian was one of the most skilled fighters we have produced over the last 20 years. His punch power his engine and his height prob let him down in the long run. he was a defensive master and i used to love watching his skills.

he could shoulder roll before it was called a shoulder roll.

Ians skills, back to the ropes, were very Toney-esque

Assuming the OP meant active fighters, Crawford, Rigo and Fury all use their front shoulder as their last line of defence.

Willie pep was the original master of defensive skills and shoulder rolls, everyone since has just copied him and added there own little bit, Whittaker, Toney, maywether and the rest through to modern active fighters who try and use it, it can be very effective if you can master it and your timing is good and against single and double punches but not so much against varied combinations/punches in bunches, hence why you saw mayweather struggle using it and imo lose to Oscar Dela Hoya in their fight

My late father always said Pep was the greatest pure boxer he ever saw. He furthered it by saying the he had to be because he couldn't punch his way through a paper bag. Ah the old school!

Fantastic as Locche was - and he's quite possibly in the top three defensive fighters of all time - I can't imagine how you would begin to teach his style to anyone else!

Watch Fury/Wilder... Fury rolls that shoulder nicely. The way to do it is to just avoid the shot so it rides just over the left shoulder, so you can come back with the right. Where it goes wrong, using Fury as an example again, is when you mistime/roll your head the wrong way i.e. the first Wilder/Fury knock down

Hopkins does it pretty well too, shots tend to bounce off his shoulder

Pep was developing into a strong puncher before the accident.

This. I saw Ian live on a number of occasions and was lucky enough to report on him. A joy to watch in his prime and flashes of brilliance later on.

They say southpaws can’t do it because of the angle the straight right comes at you from, but you definitely can. Gervonta, Zab Judah, Sweet Pea Whitaker all used it well.

It’s seen as a flashy style, and maybe a bit misunderstood. whenever someone uses it and gets caught people are quick to say “he wouldn’t have got hit if he had his hands up” but no one ever says a high guard must be crap when someone gets sparked using it.

The trick is to get the shot to bounce off upward so you can counter underneath, if you take flush shots on your shoulder you can get injured.
