The ambidextrous boxers (the elite level only) ?

by ValMar
This is the very interesting topic, and I can not remember there was a discussion about in this forum (at least recently).
Tyson had the lethal power in the both hands, but (as I can remember) he had been boxing (always, or almost alaways) in the ortodox stance
Ward, maybe ? Hagler, too ?
Is Terence Crawford a natural born ambidexter ?
Anyone else ?

Mike Tyson was a switch hitter, though he mainly fought orthodox.

Hagler, Cotto, Ward and Hamed were all switch hitters.

Yes !
What about Terence Crawford ? Is he an ambidexter, or he pretends to be (from time to time) ?

Seems like Cotto might've actually turned Southpaw briefly in the fight with Lovemore Ndou, but I don't recall him doing that any other time in his career. He might have, but that's one of the only occasions I can remember.

I do remember they mentioned him being left handed a lot though.

Inoue never fought in a southpaw stance

Navarrete switched a lot of times in both fights vs Dogboe

Jacobs did it vs Canelo

I don't recall Tyson fighting out of a southpaw stance. Hagler was the best I've seen, since him it would be Crawford.

i dont think they are naturally just, i think they practice from both sides.
like there are many famous converted lefties like frazier, liston, etc.

nas hamed was great at it. tyson didnt fight southpaw but could throw hooks well enough from that stance.
herol graham did it i think. ... the brendal ingle gym.

Obviously you didn't see his last fight

Strangely, Cotto and De La Hoya were left handed (for power) but fought out of the orthodox stance.

I doubt that there are many truly ambidextrous boxers as it’s fairly rare as a trait. To be technically ambidextrous they should write equally well with either hand as I can, not just switch stance. Very few sportspeople are truly ambidextrous, Ronnie O’Sullivan is an obvious example...

Inoue did test out the southpaw stance earlier in his career, for a bout at 115 as well.

Interestingly Srisaket fought his debut rightly, then most of his career lefty, and was orthodox for most of his last fight.. Yeah that didn't work.

Cotto was a right handed southpaw I think

Probably a lot more common for a left handed guy to fight orthodox than for a right handed guy to fight Southpaw. Winky is the only fighter that even comes to mind that I've ever heard of doing that.

the only fighter i've seen switch while going forward... switching with each step and power punching with both hands was Pirog. It's part of the new Russian stance being taught to many top talents now. But nobody did it as well as him.

Pirog was a fantastic fighter. Pity his back went.

I once heard Hagler is actually right-handed also. Frazier was left-handed I believe.

Thanks for bringing that. Could you name some of the current Russian fighters using that style? I know you post lots of videos, so if you have videos of any of those guys that would be greatly appreciated. But if all you have is the names of some of them that's fine because we could find videos of them on YouTube or Vimeo!! :TU:
