This guy is trying to change the rule in Welsh Boxing which bans beards. Is there an advantage to having a beard in Boxing? At what point does having a beard cushion the blow on punches to the chin?

It's been done to death on current scene,my opinion is it offers no protection at all and ex fighters have said the same.

wether not they offer an extra layer of cushion is a debatable point. A heavy enough beard imo is going to absorb at least a small part of the force of the blow. Afterall, many boxing gloves are stuffed with horsehair.

Why not just make it mandatory that boxers can only have some stubble most. Couple of mm.

Fighters make much greater sacrifices than that when fighting, they train and diet for months leading up to it, many dehydrate their bodies to the limit, so what's the problem with having a shave ffs?

He's worried about shaving off his beard, so he can be allowed to smack someone in the face, but is boxing in itself not meant to be haraam for Muslims?

Sure we've had Hamed and Khan (who both shaved), and are both practising muslims, but i believe Islam's stance on boxing is it is forbidden, maybe this fella needs to consider that before petitioning to allow beards in boxing based on religous grounds. Its a touch contradictory is it not?

If the gloves offered a cushion because of the horsehair then it would be harder to ko someone with a beard if you get my meaning

Whilst a thick beard would offer a degree of cushioning it is absolutely negligible.
The rule used to be that a boxer must be clean shaven.
The reason being so that the referee can clearly see any damage and so that neither boxer has an unfair advantage. You may remember that for the Klitschko fight David Haye wore a much longer beard than usual, in an effort to disguise the line of his chin/the target.
Also to avoid an abrasive surface rubbing against a cut.
I have boxed with stubble but when in the U.K. have always taken shaving kit with me in case the BBBoC insisted that I was clean shaven.
Presumably given this story the rule is still in place but rarely enforced.

That's what i was thinking

As an 18 year old I was made to shave before a fight, I was barely capable of growing a beard and essentially there was nothing there. It was apparently because of cushioning a shot, but that's nonsense.

I think so. If David Price grew a large full beard to protect that chin, plus a thick permed afro to cushion shots to his temple, I think he’d be virtually unbeatable and possibly one of the greats.

Yeh., Hamed NEVER supported a beard and Khan supports a small-ish beard when not boxing and completely shaves it on fight night.
