The very first time I knew about the great Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns was about in July, 1980. There was this American magazine named Sport, and inside the mag there was a section of boxing's uprising prospects. One of them was Tommy "The Hitman" Hearns. He was about 26-0, 24 KOs. Something like that. What I noticed the most about him was his incredible height for a Welterweight at 6'1". I said to myself, "This guy is in Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard's weight class?" "Wow!". The other thing I read about him that he had a tremendous punching power and an afro.

Other prospects in that read were middleweight Curtis Parker, Dwight Davidson, Alex Ramos and a few other fighters that I can not remember right now. But THE ONE that caught my attention was The Motor City Cobra.

Two months later, a cousin of mine told me that Mexican WBA World Welterweight Champion, Pipino Cuevas was knocked out in two by Hearns. I said to him, "Ain't nobody stopping Pipino, you are crazy!" He said that he saw the fight and that Hearns crushed him in only two rounds! Two rounds!

Next thing I know, I saw Tommy again in a section in Jet Magazine as the new WBA World Welterweight Champion. He looked menacing and scary. He is still one of the most menacing figures that I have ever seen in boxing. That cold stare of those eyes looking at you should be frightening. Plus, his reach and height should also give you some type of intimidation.

When he was suppose to fight Sugar Ray Leonard for the Unification showdown at 147lbs, I saw some of his highlight clips. Holy Moses! What I have just saw? His knockouts we're something like if his opponents didn't have no chance. And the Cuevas' knockout? Forget it! I just watched in disbelief. "Sugar Ray is in real trouble", I said. But, I felt at the time that Sugar Ray was the better fighter. Sugar Ray won, but he did paid the price.

When was the first time that you ever saw this phenom named Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns?

When he knocked down Mike Colbert like 5 times on his way to a UD win on the undercard of Johnson/Galindez.

First time I went Holy Crap was the Cuevas fight.

For me it was the Hutchings fight. I was impressed. Then they made the Hagler fight, it was so exciting at the time. They showed it in the local cinema but I had no money to go in those days. If I had had a few quid I‘d have been straight down there.
