Jermaine Franklin has hyped himself as the best American prospect in the heavyweight division, but his first two outings on Showtime this year have frankly left a good bit to be desired, as he didn’t exactly thrill in his win over Rydell Booker in April, and there was plenty to question in his split decision win over Jerry Forrest in July.

But the 25-year-old from Saginaw, Michigan, will get another chance to show his stuff on Oct. 5, when he features on the Claressa Shields-Ivana Habazin card from Flint, once again live on Showtime.

“This is what I have been waiting for,” said Franklin. “I can’t wait to put a show on in front of my hometown with friends and family in the crowd.”

Franklin (19-0, 13 KO) has been criticized a bit for having something of a “soft” body, standing 6’2” and weighing 240-245 for his last two fights, which was up a notable amount from his fights before this year. He says that’s been a focus.

“I’ve been working on my diet and taking better care of my body since my last fight,” he said. “I’m focused on not wasting any punches and letting the knockout come naturally, not pushing for it. I’m going to be better conditioned and more patient and finally prove to fans why I’m America’s next great heavyweight.”

This time out, he’ll be facing 36-year-old Czech club fighter Pavel Sour, who will be fighting in the U.S. for the first time. In his only fight outside of the Czech Republic, he was flattened in the first round by Filip Hrgovic in Oct. 2017, a fight that took place in Germany. Hrgovic is a legitimate top heavyweight prospect, and Franklin will want to do something similar.

“I have the technique, speed and power to beat Jermaine Franklin,” said Sour. “I am in great shape, I’m training hard and I’m very confident heading into this fight. Franklin is underestimating me because of my age, but I’m going to show him he’s wrong and have my hand raised when the final bell rings.”

Sour (11-1, 6 KO) last fight came on April 6, when he successfully defended the Czech heavyweight title against the much younger and previously unbeaten Tomas Salek.

I'm not buying into the Franklin hype. The only reason he has that 19-0 record is because of shrewd matchmaking. But Sour is a legit test, even though he is 36, he just handed young Czech HW prospect Salek his first loss!! I've got Franklin by hard-fought decision, maybe a disputed decision since Saginaw is right next to Flint!!

I dont think Franklin is as good as Hrgovic so matching Filip's early blowout is unrealistic!!

Franklin is crap.

I don't know anything about Sour so Franklin might win this, but from what I've seen of Franklin I can't imagine him ever legitimately cracking the Top 20.

He might wind up ranked in a title orgs Top 20 if somebody buys him his slot, but he'll quickly be disposed by any high level contender.

Franklin fought a bum on a show i went to in WV years back. Had power but hard to tell his talent cause the oppenet sucked

I've seen Franklin fight twice. It's easy to tell his talent. He's not now nor will he ever be a Top 30 Heavyweight.

If he fought David Price in his next fight I'd confidently pick David.

Ya Frank's not that good at all. Disappointing, because for a while his record looked pretty promising considering his age, but then when I finally saw him fight you could tell his talent was just not really there.

I thought Jerry Forrest beat him last time out and it was obvious to me that if Rydell Booker wasn't old and hadn't been in prison for years he would've handily beat him too. Price would pound him.

Yep he was the Main Event at a card I attended last year, and he was kinda ho hum there too. Booker incidentally was on that card against a different opponent.

I got the same impression in the Booker fight, that if Booker were just younger he'd have won, because he clearly was the more refined boxer, he just didn't have the engine anymore to keep up the pace. Franklin's youth and stamina is the only thing that won him that one I felt like Booker probably won 3 of the first 5 rounds, but just couldn't keep it up down the stretch, and like you I also thought Forrest beat him.

Michigan native Jermaine Franklin returned home Saturday in front of his hometown crowd hoping to show that boxing’s glamour division could have another prospect to keep an eye on moving forward.

Franklin (20-0, 13 KOs) dropped Pavel Sour (11-2, 6 KOs) in the sixth and tenth rounds and scored a unanimous decision victory in a sloppy fight by the scores of 98-91, 98-90 and 97-91 Saturday at the Dort Federal Event Center in Flint, Michigan.

The 25-year-old Franklin, a former 2014 National Golden Gloves champion with only 35 amateur fights, was looking for an impressive performance following two sub par wins over Jerry Forrest and Rydell Booker earlier this year, but didn’t necessarily get the convincing and star-in-the-making win he was looking for.

The Saginaw born-and-raised Franklin, who was fighting in Michigan for just the second time in career, used skills, youth and power to overcome a 3 ½ inch height disadvantage to stop a tough opponent who was 11 years his senior.

Franklin outlanded Sour 147 to 109 in total punches, and came out strong in the first minute, working his left hand and right cross and staggering an unbalanced Sour a couple of times, easily winning the round.
