Daniel Jacobs vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. - December 20, 2019

by Ruthless-RKO
Jacobs (35-3, 29 KO) is coming off of a May 4 decision loss to Canelo Alvarez in one of the bigger fights of 2019, a performance where he was competitive but no one argued for him having won the fight. The 32-year-old said after that he was starting to have trouble making 160, and a move to 168 has been in the cards since.
Chavez (51-3-1, 33 KO) is now 33 years old and hasn’t been seen by much of anyone since his May 2017 loss to Canelo, a miserable non-effort where he was shut out over 12-rounds in the 164-pound catchweight fight. In all reality, Chavez has never been a genuine top fighter, and once he was exposed by Sergio Martinez in 2012, things have been pretty much downhill. He struggled with Bryan Vera in two fights, was pummeled into submission by Andrzej Fonfara in 2015, and his last three wins have been over mediocre at best fighters.

Just Jacobs introduction into the SMW division.

it remains to be seen how good Jacobs really is..until now he's been in the habit of playing games with his weight getting unfair advantages over his opponents..

Even against JCC jr. at 168 isn't the true SMW test.
Chavez should be a LHW, but then HE would be at a disadvantage.

thats what making weight is from minimum to cruiser.
What games did he play exactly that gave him "unfair" advantages?
Any professional boxer (except stepping up in weight class) will always fight at the weight class that he's able to make through the unpleasant procedure of... making weight.
Not making weight would result in pretty much constant defeat to boxers at least 2 weightclasses naturally bigger than yourself.
This would be quite unprofessional.

check out his weight vs Golovkin and Canelo..I believe on both fight nights he belonged to a higher weight category or at least broke an agreement on maximum allowable weight..

Wow seriously? Crazy move on Jr's part. He must just think that a hail mary attempt to get a big win is his only real chance at gaining credibility or something.
He'd definitely get back in the mix with a win here, but he won't win. He'll be doing well to win a round or two.

"We are close [to a deal], most of the important details have already been agreed upon. I am sure positive that they believe that I don't have much left to give in boxing, but they will be in for a surprise in December. A few months ago nothing appeared on the radar and now I am facing the most important fight of my life," Chavez said to ESPN Deportes.

Daniel Jacobs vs. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. has been moved from December 13 to December 20 on DAZN, according to @MikeCoppinger. The original date of December 13th wasn’t going to work for the Jacobs-Chavez Jr. fight due to their being a DAZN card headlined by unbeaten welterweight contender Vergil Ortiz Jr. taking place on December 14.
It appears that they didn’t want to take the attention away from 21-year-old Ortiz Jr. (14-0, 14 KOs), who could be the next star for Golden Boy Promotions.
The original working date was Dec. 13, but with Vergil Ortiz Jr. slated to headline a DAZN show Dec. 14, the Jacobs-Chavez fight is now pegged for Dec. 20. Would give DAZN cards on three consecutive weekends in December

Well, as Stringer Bell said to Avon Barksdale, man ain't wrong about that. When's the last time he had credibility -- when he beat Andy Lee?

Anything but boring. JCC fighting 6 more turne-ups is boring, but Jacobs is the real deal. I expect Jacobs to handle him pretty easily, but kudos to both fighters for making a potentially risky fight.

Team GGG and the boxing fraternity expected Jacobs to not bother contending for the IBF belt, because after all, the bout was mandated by the WBA.
Everyone from Team GGG claimed that Jacobs weighing more than 170lbs was not an issue, so why are you claiming that Daniel Jacobs “broke some sort of agreement?”
If GGG wasn't bothered about Jacobs' actions, which many boxing pundits predicted, then it really shouldn't be considered an issue... otherwise Team Golovkin would have included a weight rehydration limit to the fight contract, but they didn't.
Danny Jacobs didn't break any rules. So he almost certainly behaved in a sporting manner.
Jacobs' official weight for the Golovkin bout was 159.8lbs which is the only thing that matters. Nobody knows what his rehydrated ring-weight was on fight night.
In terms of the Canelo fight, Jacobs fulfilled his contractual obligations. So his weight wasn’t an issue for that bout.
What I’ve written isn’t an opinion either, it’s an accurate reflection of the real-world events that transpired.

I don't remember the exact details now...On fight night my perception was that Jacobs belonged to a different weight category..I'm not really worried who said what and whether GGG team was or wasn't happy with this arrangement...

Fair enough, but I was only commenting on your thoughts about Jacobs allegedly breaking an agreement, because that didn't happen.

Jacobs beats him easily. JC will do his punching bag impression and it will be a boring lopsided fight. JC hasn't won anything meaningful in years.

Common sense and conventional wisdom strongly-suggests that Danny Jacobs scores a lop-sided decision victory over a past-his-prime highly-inactive version of Chavez Jr. doing another excellent punch-bag impression.
However, I have this sneaking suspicion that “something” suprising may happen in a bout that superficially appears to be a blatant mismatch.
Danny Jacobs has been stopped and hurt before, as per the Dmitry Pirog bout. And Chavez Jr. is a fighter that has previously proven capable of snatching victory from the jaws of defeat (which he almost achieved against Sergio Martinez).
Danny Jacobs will also be facing an opponent that is bigger than himself, which is something I don’t think he’s done before.
I’m definitely not predicting an upset victory for the Mexican, but I do feel that there might be one or two very brief surprising or exciting moments in what will otherwise be a rather dull one-sided fight.

Jacobs wins every minute of every round. Total waste of Jacob's time

An easy win for a substantial amount of money is a good way to waste time for a fighter
