Remembering Darren Sutherland today on his 10 year anniversary. Still a very hard one to fathom.
Such a shame we never got to see him fight Degale in the pro ranks to try avenge that defeat in the Olympics.

Always tragic when someone takes their own life.

Yes, tragic indeed. I couldn’t understand it at all at the time. A young successful guy potentially on the way to superstardom. At least it seemed that way from the outside.

Depression is no respecter of success or potential, you can have the world at your feet and yet feel hollowed out, empty and desperately, desperately at odds with yourself and the world.

But he already beat DeGale twice in the AMS before the Olympics.
In the 2007 and the 2008 EU Amateur Championships. Won Gold in both of them.

He did indeed but his defeat to Degale in Beijing was on the global stage. Would have loved to see them square off in the pros.

If you don’t have peace in the mind then you don’t have nothing at all regardless of how it seems you have so much to the outside world, such a terrible shame, please god he is at peace now R.I.P champ

I remember him posting a lot on here during the early days of his pro career.
So sad.

After he died, DeGale always wore the DS initials on his shorts.

Didn’t they have more fights too? I’m sure I read Sutherland led 3-2 overall
Anyway, such a crazy situation. Never can tell I guess. What might have been

I didn't know either fact. That's incredibly classy. I feel a sod for not supporting James more.

I think Darren beat him 4-2 as an amateur. I thought it was an incredibly classy gesture to have Darren's name on his shorts and mention him after winning the world title.
Darren was a lovely guy; very thoughtful, self-contained and self-sufficient. Hearing about his death was a real shock and he is still missed!! I think he would have done well as a pro. He had excellent timing and threw punches in combination and was strong.
