Just got back from Vegas

Here I am, got in today.
It was truly painful to watch. More so as he is a friend. The first round effectively finished the fight. He was knocked down and the cut and the swelling finished it there and then.
But what guts and bravery from Danny. He just refused to quit. I don't think I've ever seen a braver guy in a boxing ring.
Jimmy Mac is taking it badly. He just can't fathom what happened.
Audley and Herbie were there. Herbie in particular was being a real tosser pissing everyone off, he had rushed the press conference on Wednesday ( I didn't see it, I got there on Thursday).
Saw Rahman and met Roy Jones. He was really small, and he looked like a light-middleweight!!
The plan seems to be to let Danny rest for six months and then get him back in. In my opinion he needs to fight a fringe contender once he's recharged his batteries. I guess they'll be looking for Brewster, as he's the easiest of the others.
I never agreed with the Klitschko match. You don't learn anything from beating a washed-up ex champ then suddenly thrown in against the best of them all. He should have been fighting in the top twelve/fifteen for a few fights before maybe taking on Ruiz, for example.
A good rest, and then straight back with the big boys. It's tough at the top and Danny needs to adjust to that calibre. If it was easy then everyone would be doing it!
He must not be back in with domestic opposition. He might as well quit if he does.

Hi Boxingmad,
I didn't realise you knew Williams well, send him my best and I agree with your views on Danny's future. It might be hard though for him to get the other champions. King is desperate to hype Ruiz/Byrd/Brewester and his other guys in his stable as equals to Vitali, the last thing he wants is to sign someone who got beat up by him.
Domestic fights is the last thing he needs, I think Monte Barrett would be a good fight, a fight with Riddick Bowe would make some waves (and judging by his condition would be easy).
This might be a liable comment, but I think if his promoter doesn't want him to continue and he does, then he might need to look for a new employer.
I did wander if Danny didn't get cut perhaps things in his corner would have been better. It would have been McDonnell in the ring and maybe the confusion between McDonnell and the other guy wouldn't have happend.
Personally I would have like to have seen Danny go for it more, I know he was capable of much better than that (and its a pity he didn't show it). Danny has shown a good double jab in the past, that is the weapon to distract Klitshcko. I don't know if it was the weight or psychological that prevented Danny for throwing more punches, I think only team Williams can answer that.

What has McDonnell been saying about the fight boxingmad?
Also, instead of Klitschko a fight with Holyfield before he was embarassed by Donald would have been ideal for Danny. I think Danny would have blasted Evander out in the early rounds and got some more big fight experience. Vitali was just a step too far.

Rubbish - if this fight has shown one thing it is that Danny is domestic / European level at best.
He was given a total pasting - didn't win a second of the fight let alone a round.
There are several big fights to be had at domestic level - Hide, Harrison, Skelton and beyond that maybe a Tyson rematch.
Anyone genuinely world class will win.
Sorry mate, that's the truth. But you're right he showed enormous bravery, almost on the level of Tex Cobb and George Chuvalo.

I genuinely believe that Williams would beat Brewster hands down. This experience will do Williams good and hopefully he can come back and do something on the fringes of the top level. But he must never ever get in the ring with a fighter as good as Klitschko again, to be honest it was so embarassing I was cringeing.

Dont see how that experience can have done him any good - he took an absolute shallacking there are no positives to take from it if you ask me.
Jimmy Mac cant fathom what happened? Easy enough to work out, they bulked him up too much and all he could do was plod around getting hammered from pillar to post. He should have just gone hell for leather for a couple of rounds rather than plodding forward eating shots for 8 rounds getting half a dozen shots off per round. And the corner work was diabolical.
I think Williams can stay on the fringes but he needs to do some serious work on reducing his weight, he is not good at 245-250 he needs to be coming in below 18 stone its plainly obvious he's a better fighter carryin less bulk. If he doesnt want to take the weight off he may aswell retire as he'll be copping plenty more beatings at 250, in fact as i have said elsewhere I can see Skelton battering him senseless if he came in at 250lbs for a match between them.

007,
Do you think it was the weight or psychological that he couldn't move quickly? It is not an opinion merely a question. I mean, Tyson was way over weight for his fights with Neilson and Lewis yet for the first round he was producing some good "charges" and looked fast, then he tired.
Surely even if he was 25 stone he could have moved quickly (or at least quicker) for a short period of time. My father thought it was psychological, not scared of Klitshcko but scared to fight, scared of the risk. When I used to spar with a Welsh international light heavyweight I would take a beating from him all day, but wouldn't like to commit myself to pressurising like I know I needed to in order to stand any chance in the session - I was alot faster than him, but wouldn't as opposed to couldn't. I was brave, but was trying to survive as opposed to win - is that what Williams did?

I must ask you guys, as I was sitting quite far away and you all saw it on TV - what the bloody hell was going on in the corner? I'm hearing that McPherson was saying one thing whilst Jimmy Mac was saying another? Can someone clarify?
I still feel that Williams needs to be operating at the top level. Knowing him as I do, I can tell you that fights against Harrison & Skelton etc will just not motivate him. The only one that might is Herbie Hide, as there's a beef there that goes way back. However, if you were watching on Saturday, you'd be justified thinking that he's a no hoper on the world stage.

Yes thats what happend, McPherson was saying stuff like "don't quit on me champ", "this is for the title". Jim was talking quieter on the other side, couldn't really hear what he was saying.

IMO these would be a great set of fights, would be exciting to see anyone of these guys fight each other

I didn't say that - in fact I disagree completely.

What exactly were Jim's tactics then? Because, to be honest, there was no sign of them in the ring....
All I can say is Danny should take heart from an extremely brave showing - and when the dust settles, people will remember that for years to come. Terrible beating I know, but I'm glad he at least made it out of the first round.
If he wants more big fights, he should look at Golota: there's a guy who's come back from far worse and finds himself still in the title picture.
Just proves that with heavies, it aint over till the fat lady sings.

I think both were factors. However if he had come in lighter and had a bit more speed and mobility then he'd have eaten a lot less leather early on which would in turn have affected him less psychologically. Having seen Williams fight over the years there is no doubt in my mind that he should be shedding a few pounds. I think he looked fat at 19 stone 4, he didnt look chiselled at all too me and his stomach was soft. Thats bad preperation.

I think he meant he agrees with my comment....the post was just badly edited.
Boxingmad - you disagree completely?? Well where else can Danny go after such a comprehensive whipping?
Maybe you want him to become like Julius Francis, the whipping boy for up and coming European haevyweights???

I haven't brought myself to watch the fight again since Saturday but I got the impression that Danny's legs were gone from the first kd and he was unable to bob an weave as he was just too unsteady.
But then i thought he recovered pretty quickly from those 2 Tyson left hooks in their first round so that couldn't be it.
The fitness that kept Danny getting up each time could have just as easily been used to do his best impression of a peek-a-boo bobbing and weaving 80's Tyson. I think he just reverted to his old style under pressure.
Also sparring with Akinwande is no preparation for Vit's bizarrely unique style.

Danny is way above the likes of Francis. I think that one hint of him not being able to cut it will prompt a speedy retirement from boxing. It's a case of getting back there refreshed and eager to prove himself. If he can't do it, then he should retire. But not until he's had other opportunities. It took Bruno three gos to win the title. Danny was thrown in against it, IMO.
Now it's a case of rebuilding and working back into contention. A 4 round win against a 2 round fighter isn't world class. I totally disagreed with the Klitschko match. He should have worked his way into it and after 3 fights gone for Ruiz or Brewster. Not the big one.

Hmmmm. are you forgetting that Danny actually lost to Julius? Also the 'hint' of him not being able to cut it at world level has more than arrived - that hint being the severe beating he got on Saturday.
As I said there are still fights for him - but not against true world class opponents (and taht includes the mediocre Brewster)

Danny has a decent chance against Brewster who is really nothing special.
If it wasn't for the fact that Wlad punched himself out, or whatever it was that happened to him, Brewster would have got beaten like a gong, he's not really world class himself.

Why did Jimmy Mc have Sterling in the corner, i and why didn't they have a professional cutsman?
