After 15 years behind bars, former IBF middleweight champion and WBA super middleweight champ Michael Nunn of Davenport has a new address. Nunn is now living in a work release center in downtown Davenport. His probation officer tells us Nunn will be living there with no end-date set. Nunn was arrested in 2002 after buying cocaine from an undercover agent. The drugs reportedly had a street value of $24,000 at the time. Nunn was sentenced in 2004 to more than 24 years in prison. A probation officer tells Local 4 News that Nunn is not allowed visitors or interviews. - ourquadcities.com

This weekend there was a boxing card in Davenport, Iowa. The event featured an appearance by Michael Nunn. Nunn received a nice ovation from the crowd and everyone in attendance was happy to have him back.

The sentence imposed on Michael Nunn sounds particularly harsh. He paid $200 for some cocaine and was sentenced to 24 years, yet some of his fellow pros, who are convicted rapists and domestic abusers, only served a few weeks/months of their sentence.

Even though Michael Nunn was guilty of paying $200 for some cocaine, he served about the same amount of prison time as Ike Ibeabuchi, with the Nigerian trying to commit suicide when he abducted his 15-year-old son and ex-girlfriend, slamming his car into a concrete pillar, inflicting life-changing injuries on his child.

Anyway, Michael Nunn has served his time, paid his price to society and I hope he learns from his mistakes and finds a way to live a happy life.

Insane sentence for selling something most of Congress uses anyway. They ruined his career but didn't take his life anyway.

Anybody that thinks they can buy a kilo for $200 absolutely deserves what they get.

He pleaded guilty to drug trafficking. That's not the same thing as simply buying some drugs.

Government entraps and poses ludicrous sentence on him, a non violent criminal. Ridiculous

Probably plea bargained from something outrageous. What I remember hearing was basically the prosecution made out like he was Scarface.

Anybody buying pounds of cocaine knows the risk. His stupidity is the issue here, not the sentence. They can't front you drugs and charge you. Saying we'll front you the $24,000 worth of product as long as you give us $200 in good faith is the most obvious cop situation you could ever present. Like drug dealer alphabet.

About time he was released, I hate drugs but he was stitched up here, hope he leads a great life and I wish him well, he was a great boxer too.

That sentence was utter silliness.

24 years with 15 served though? Especially considering Amber Guyen getting 10 years, maybe out in 5 for murder.

If he got life it would be his dumb ass fault. I imagine it wasn't his first offense?

Still too excessive

I disagree that trafficking in hard drugs is really a “non-violent” offense.

He wasn't actually trafficking. He "intended" to do it. He never had the drugs and he sure didn't have enough money for the street value of those drugs.

Michael Nunn tried to buy one kilo of cocaine from an undercover agent for $200, which resulted in the former boxer serving 15 years of a 24-year prison sentence.

I’m not endorsing his actions, but the severity of the punishment almost certainly didn’t fit the seriousness of his crime.

Completely agree. The US criminal justice system is utterly idiotic and flawed. It victimises people from impoverished backgrounds without regard for circumstance or reason. The sentence was clearly manifestly excessive and the fact he paid $200 shows how ridiculous the whole case was and certainly suggests an element of entrapment.

The American judicial system is widely regarded in the UK as entirely disproportionate, unfair, grossly-excessive and selective. It would be interesting to see how Nunn would have been dealt with by the criminal justice system had he been a white middle-class ex-boxing champion...
